Hard drive died after 18 months

I've owned my iHP-120 for about 18 months and worked great. However, it stopped working suddenly and won't recognize the hard drive anymore. When I turn it on, it says "CHECK HDD CONNECTION."

I found out online that A LOT of people are having the exact same problem and it's not fixable. Most people are getting replacements if under warranty. I am really disappointed in the player. See my former review below.

    Pros
    -Plays tons of file formats
-Line in lets you record MP3s from virtually any audio source.
-No special software needed to transfer music, just plug in the USB cable and go.
    -Very fast transfers
-Can use is as a portable hard drive to store any kind of data
    -FM tuner is great
-Sound quality is excellent with customizable EQ settings
    -Firmware is upgradable
    -Battery life is great!
-Some cool 3rd-party operating system software is available (RockBox)

    Cons
    -iRiver support is terrible.
-Buttons all have more than one function and it can be hard to remember how to do some of the advanced functions. Basic navigation and playback is very intuitive however.
-Joystick navigation can be a little clumsy when jogging, etc
-No built-in playlist creation feature. However it does support Winamp playlists.
    - Monochrome display (no support for pics)
    - Not good for jogging.

I really like this player a lot. I have over 1000 songs on it and have only used about 5 GB.

One thing to consider about hard drive players is that they are not built for running or other activities where they will get bounced around a lot. Mine has done well, but I dropped it recently and it is starting to have problems finding the next song when I jog now. I sometimes have to stand still before it will start the next song. Iriver tech support advised me that it's not good to jog with this player.

      Iriver H-120

I am extremely happy with my purchase of the MP3 player. It has worked perfectly for over a year now. It gives me FM radio, a 20GB USB hard drive, a simple to use MP3 interface. Best of all, it gives you excellent recording capabilities. You can record in mp3 and wav format up to 48K 16 bit files. I use a SONY dat portable mic and I get perfect results. It records each session as a separate file in a folder. You just have to plug in the usb cable and the player pops up and you can copy or cut the files and put them anywhere in a few seconds. This is just the perfect tool for any audio person that loves to listen to mp3's and radio and want to record at anywhere in high format. Oh, yes, the battery is also very long lasting. For me after 1 year of having this unit, I get a week out of 1 battery charge for medium use and 2 weeks out of low use.

Portable hdd, wav format recording, FM radio, mp3 player, and a good battery.
