IRiver X20 A+quality, endless features, great value

I bought the IRIVER because it has virtually every feature you would want in an MP3 player. 8 GB flash memory, quality display, FM radio, Line-in, Voice recorder, removable battery, built in speakers that are not exactly high-fidelity but are nice to have just the same, Micro SD expansion slot and solid, clear sound. The overall quality and ease of use use are excellent with the only drawback being the rather thin control wheel that can be slightly hard to rotate as quickly as you might want to. The size of the IRIVER is a bit larger than other flash based MP3 players but it is by no means unwieldy or heavy. The software included is solid and easy to use but I ripped and synched my enitre CD library with Windows Media Player 11 with equal and effortless success. I am completely satisfied with it so far and for the price it's an amazing value.

iRiver X20 (8 GB) MP3 Player and Recorder

The iRiver X20 is a good buy. I bought it specifically because it offers line-in recording. I use it to record in MP3 from my home stereo. I have an extensive collection of old cassette tapes I plan to convert. I may convert my vinyl LPs as well. And some old reel to reels. I also like the FM radio. I recorded an internet radio station by connecting the headphone jack of the laptop to the line-in jack of the X20. I have been experimenting with shareware MP3 editing software since the included software does not split the stream into songs but yields one large MP3 file.

I have also loaded my MP3s from my home computer onto it. I use it with a cassette adapter in the car on road trips.

You might want different ear buds. The ones with it kept falling out of my ears. I also bought a nice fitted leather case for it.

The click wheel type interface isn't the best but it is functional and you get used to it after awhile. It does seem more intuitive after you've used it a while. I would buy it again.

Easy to download music, dvds, pictures. Rip, click and paste. Nice display. Dial a little hard to turn at times. Have to put your finger where the notches are.

  iRiver X20 MP3 Player
Review created: 02/09/08(updated 02/14/08)

Intuitive, veresatile player (my version is the 8Gb player). I have a large collection of WMA files, so the Apple players were non-starters. Even without that, I would have chosen this because it has a removeable, replaceable Li-ion battery - a vast convenience when compared with the Apple approach.

Pros:
Clear 320x240 movies, which you can create with the supplied converter software.
Picture viewer with zoom-in.
Radio with presets.
Voice recorder.
Additional storage with a micro-SD card.
A browser view to go along with playlists, etc. Nicely designed click and turn control wheel.
Clear loud configurable sound through headphones, with the option to play through speaker (though not at boom-box volume!)
Good playtime per charge (charges when connected to computer with a standard mini-USB - no proprietary plug or separate charger to misplace)!
That replaceable battery.
iRiver quality - I have other iRiver products, with no problems whatsoever.

Cons:
Comes without case or armband.
No gasket on USB port - better keep this one away from water and sweat!

Hints:
If you use a micro-SD card, be aware that adding many small files on one will produce a long wait while the device "rebuilds" its library. Better reserve the add-on storage for a few large videos.
Check on eBay for belt and pocket cases, or check your local electronics store for armband cases that will fit the X20.
A battery for an Insignia player will also fit the X20.

Verdict:
Reasonably priced quality flash player. If you can get it into a protective case, the rating goes to Excellent.
