  Excellent high-feature mp3 player

I bought this mp3 player used about four months ago, and it is still working like a dream. I wanted an mp3 player that I can keep around for a long time and have it keep up with the changing technology. With all the file formats the h320 supports, this is the one. It also has great voice recording--I take it to my college classes and record the lectures. The voice recording (and recordings from the FM radio) are created in mp3 format.

Pros:
* Supports many file formats, including wma, mp3, and ogg.
* Can function as an external hard drive, storing (although not necessarily playing) any file type.
* Virtually unlimited-length voice recording due to the hard drive space
* When connected to a radio (such as with a cassette converter) it can access FM radio (maybe AM--I haven't tried) and record from it. Can automatically seek out stations and save them in channels.
* Can charge through a wall charger OR through a USB cable connected to a computer.

Cons:
* Controls beyond basic play-stop-forward-back are NOT intuitive--may need to refer to the manual occasionally.
* Start up time is slow, as is save-time for recordings.
* A bit bulkier than comparable players.
* All file changes must be done through the computer. No on-the-fly playlists, no sorting songs, no deleting songs without connecting it to a computer.
* No bookmarking of lengthy files (such as audio books)

Overall I am well-pleased with this player. If the cons don't bother you, this is the one to choose.

iRiver H320, Best Rockbox Music Player
Review created: 12/11/08
by:

The iRiver H320 is the BEST music player able to run the BEST portable music software -- ROCKBOX!

Often described as an 'audiophile' DAP by enthusiasts, the iRiver H320 lives up to that reputation, playing lossless audio files or MP3's. The H320 also provides FM radio and superb recording capabiity.

'Rockbox' open source' music software transforms the iRiver H320 into a 'Ferrari' of digital audio players. Rockbox offers an elegant interface, 'drag and drop' flexibility, recording, games, as well as file or photo storage.

The factory installed iRiver software also works quite well; but with fewer features. Rockbox runs on Ipods and other DAPs, but is most compatible with the iRiver 'Hxxx' series players. Check it out at Rockbox.org!

The H320 features digital output, headphone jack, replaceable battery, charging via USB or power jack, color screen, positve button controls and stereo recording with the onboard or auxillary microphone.

A little larger than a deck of cards, some may find the H320 'big and clunky' compared with newer DAPs. However, the iRiver houses better components, better circuits, and a better Digital to Analog Converter than more compact devices.

While Rockbox enables video, the H320, like other'vintage' iRiver players, is really a 'full out' audio device. Many use these players as 'music servers' hooked up to their home stereo.

Lastly, the iRiver H320, H340, H120, H140 are fun to upgrade and modify. Successful mods include hardrive replacement up to 120gig (soon 240gig), battery upgrades to 2300mAh, swapping the hardrive for CF-Card solid state storage (up to 32gig and eventually beyond).

Please read about mods and features at Rockbox.org and MisticRiver.net

The H320 is a serious piece of kit that is also a lot of fun! And it runs Rockbox!!

  Old greats die hard...

The iRiver H320 is one incredible machine. It could play videos, tons of codecs, and had tons of amazing features when the iPod was still using a grayscale screen with way fewer features. The USB drive interface is very handy and highly compatible. It is nice to be able to transfer files to and from the device without restrictive, proprietary software. Rockbox, an unofficial third-party firmware, gives this device even more features, too many to list. Great for audiophiles and casual listeners/watchers alike.

great sound & microphone but TERRIBLE iriver support

the AVERAGE rating is a balance between the excellent and poor experiences i've had with this player:

EXCELLENT for sound, because it supports OGG, and because you can replace the operating system with RockBox, which makes it a much more versatile player.

also truly EXCELLENT for recording, using built-in high sensitive microphone. if you want to record a class or someone speaking, it picks up a lecture beautifully and yet seems to isolate out room noise in a way that my ipod does not. the result is a much better listening experience.

POOR for support from iriver: if it's out of warranty, you're S.O.L. heck, they won't even respond to my emails asking where i could get repair for mine OUT of warranty. (my screen has gotten dimmer and dimmer, to the point where it is unusable. however, when plugged in to A/C adapter, i do not have this problem. i sent it in once for repair, under warranty, and they fixed it -- sort of.. it was a LITTLE better.. i put up with it for a while, and then i reported it a second time in email to iriver BEFORE my warranty expired, but by the time i wrote them a second email asking them for an RMA # to send it in, they ducked out of their responsibility and got "technical" and said it was now past its warranty. EVEN though i had turned it in on the SAME problem BEFORE, and even though i had written my first email BEFORE the warranty expired.

the player is no longer usable portably, even though i paid the better part of $200 for it less than a year and a half ago.

thus, i will NEVER buy another iriver again. BUYER BEWARE.

  Good For the Money

If you're interested in pure volume, this is the way to go. You won't find 20 GB for this price. Menus are relatively easy to navigate. Would like to update the firmware. With v. 1.04, no playlists or alternative listings. Songs are all listed under Artist, then album. Interacts well with MS Media Player, Rhapsody, etc. However, I've never been able to use the music manager that shipped with the player. No matter how I connect it, software doesn't recognize that a player is there. I'm a little wary about the fact that it's a hard drive rather than a flash drive, but I bought it in mid-June and no problems to date. Good battery life. Very cool to be able to convert older media to mp3 format directly onto the player.

  iRiver H320

I always love the iRiver H320. Using Rockbox with it transform the experience of listening music forever. It has the greatest graphic equalizer nobody can't imaging. The unit I purchase came with Rockbox already installed. In perfect working conditions and excellent shape. The seller even sent me details of the applications running in the device and how to use them. After I lost my first H320 I purchase a great MP3 player: the Creative Vision:M 80GB. A wonderful unit but the sound it's not even close to the iRiver. Not been happy with the sound I read some reviews and purchase a Cowon S9. Beautiful mp3 player but again, I can't reach the sound quality of the old H320. I can even play Pac Man and Doom, have an English-French translator, soccer, basketball, bowling, Formula 1, golf, etc. Even Jeopardy! I can watch videos and download movies. A complete and perfect mp3 player. All these possible because I found an honest seller on eBay. I'm presently using a CF card on it and gain an extra 12GB with no moving parts and super speedy operations. I can't ask for more!

  Unused Battery
Review created: 07/30/09
by:

The battery was removed from one of many surplus iRiver MP3 players that share the same battery. Seller said they acquired bulk of players sold as "for parts" to dismantle for separate part to sell. Price is right if as described mileage on part/item. Part is being charged as I write this. I give seller an A++ for used but low mileage part!
