Opening scene a young player character named Tsukasa wake in a dungeon and soon realizes he can't log out of an online game called "The World." Despite being rude and stand-offish to everyone he encounters, other player soon become wrapped up in the mystery of who he is and why can't he log out. He also becomes wanted by "The Worlds" self-proclaimed police who set out to try to capture him for "playing beyond the games parameters.
The .hack (pronounced dot hack) universe spans anime, manga and video games, and all are intertwined one way or another.
I completely enjoyed this entire series, and unlike a lot of anime today has an ending I can accept and enjoy. The first volume has episodes 1-5 of the series and you find yourself thinking "Wow, that Tsukasa guy is rude" from the first moment and feeling sorry for him by the end of the disk. The series isn't really for the anime fan that only wants something action packed, but anyone who like a well told story will really enjoy this series.
Special Edition comes with a hexagon art box to hole the whole series, postcards and an envelope to store them, a sheet of stickers, the volume 1 soundtrack, the demo disk for the PS2 game .hack:Infection, a .hack t-shirt, and a small plush grunty. Quite a nice box set for the anime fan.
