Glory in Death by Nora Roberts (1995)

  Glory in Death - Tale of a Lady Killer

Pros:
Eve & Roarke ... ability to understand the surroundings easier after reading book 1.

Cons:
Not a thing!

J.D. Robb is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. Unlike my usual taste in books, I've found a new interest in the murder mysteries set in the future that she has expertly brought to her readers.

================================
Who is J.D. Robb?
================================

J.D. Robb has a dozen books written to her name (at least). The include the "In Death" series that features a futuristic female cop.

However, you can also find the same authors writings if you search for Nora Roberts. Of course, Nora has a lot more titles to her name and is a much better known "author".

About Glory in Death
================================

Glory in Death is the second in this series. It is set in the year 2058 where a lot of things have changed. Guns are banned. Prostitution is legalized and controlled. And food is prepared by AutoChefs (which I picture to be something like the Star Trek replicators.

But the one thing that hasn't changed is death. Murder. Homicide. People are still greedy. There are still those that lust for power, money, and control.

In this particular book, the victims all have one thing in common. They are powerful women, outspoken, well-known through the media. But the problem is the investigations are headed by a bull-dog of a police-officer, Eve Dallas, that always gets her man.

================================
About the Characters
================================

Eve Dallas is one heck of a woman. With a past she doesn't remember prior to eight years old, she built herself into a strong woman that defends the weak and helpless. She doesn't let up on an investigation until she has solved it completely. Which means she doesn't get a lot of sleep.

But she has become increasingly intimate with a man she met in one of her prior investigations, Roarke. And in this new relationship she is slowly learning to trust others. To allow others into her life that had been closed off since she was so horribly abused in her youth. She's expanding on her own personality and becoming more than just a cop. She's becoming a woman, a human with feelings. And it scares her.

Roarke is the man that every woman wants. He too grew up under not-so-nice circumstances and chose a different route to compensate. Instead of helping others that were down-trodden (like Eve), he decided he would help himself. He would never again have to depend on anyone. Never again be poor, helpless, or hungry.

But he, too, is changing. Instead of always in a "me, me, me" mood, he is now finding that he has an increased need to ensure "his" Lieutenant (Eve) is happy and safe.

Nadine Furst is someone we also met in the first book, but have gotten to know very well in this one. She is one of the targets of this particular serial killer. She is also a well-known anchor woman on Channel 75 news.

Nadine managed to get a lucky break. She earned her way into Eve's circle of friends and has gained almost exclusive rights to the news that comes from Lieutenant Dallas' office. She is also a very strong willed woman. Pursues a story until she has it all. To some a strong personality is a good thing, but for her, she finds that it has made her a potential victim.

About the Killer
================================

No, I'm not about to go telling "who dunnit". But it can be interesting to look at the personality of the killer.

This one begins by slicing the throat of the Prosecuting Attorney, Cicely Towers, in a dingy alley. Luring her out of her apartment late at night into an area of town she would never have gone.

The second woman was a screen star. Yvonne Metcalf was perky, always well-dressed, and definitely trying to work her way up the ladder as an actress. But she too was lured out of her home in the wee hours of the night.

In addition to these two women, he manages a third attack, same MO, middle of the night, single slice across the throat. But unfortunately, his intended victim wasn't the person who died. Instead, due to a change in routine, he failed to accomplish his mission.

The strange thing was that he was also starting a collection. He began by taking an item from Cicely Towers, an umbrella, which really had the police curious about considering how well everyone knew that Towers would never be without a matching umbrella when it was raining. For the second murder he stole a shoe. With the police looking for these items at all times, but never allowing that bit of evidence to slip to the media, they hoped to find someone soon.

My Recommendations
================================

I normally read historical romance, but have definitely found an interest in J.D. Robb's stories of Lieutenant Eve Dallas. Set in the future, in a very different world, but with much of the same problems we face everyday.

I've really enjoyed her books and look forward to working my way through the rest of them as soon as possible.
