Pros:
money-saving advice, easy to understand
Cons:
instructions for performing repairs are not always applicable to your vehicle
The title of the book says it all.
An "auto repair expert and consumer advocate..." who "has appeared on 'The Today Show'... 'NBC Nightly News' and is a regular contributor to the Los Angeles Times", the author's advice is sound. The information and tips provided really go a long way in demystifying the inner-workings of your car. It's also a handy reference tool to keep around.
After reading the book, I now know how to change my own oil and oil filter, change the air filter, fuel filter, rotate my own tires, etc.. (It's also an easy read - keep it by the toilet and cover it a few pages at a time!) It even shows how to perform a tune-up on your own and there's an interesting chapter covering electric and other "alternative-fueled" vehicles.
The author makes it clear which tasks are best left to a professional mechanic, and the level of ease or difficulty of the ones an amateur could handle.
The main drawback would be that, since there is such a wide variety of cars, the information provided is not always specific for your particular vehicle. Plus, modern cars are becoming increasingly too sophisticated for the amateur mechanic to work on, so the book often simply refers you to a professional mechanic anyway. However, the author is very candid about this.
Even if you don't plan to personally work on your car, the book is still an excellent source of maintenance tips and it can boost your confidence when talking to a real mechanic.
