Pros:
AWESOME, AWESOME movie! Great acting! Love the "less is more" setting!
Cons:
NOTHING!!!
Remember Bridges of Madison County? Remember the love and pain? I will never forget Clint Eastwood making "the big turn" out of town. The pain and love in Francesca's eyes-the devotion to her husband and family. They shared such a special love-the kind of love that can only come from knowing each other a few days. Not having to worry about her PMS. Not having to worry about his dirty underwear everywhere. No fights about how to raise the kids or where's the money going. The kind of love when you only get to know the good things.
Now imagine that weekend fling happening over and over, spanning some 20+ years.
I first saw Same Time, Next Year when I was in my very early teens. I loved it! Perhaps then it was because it had Hawkeye. (I have always been a huge MASH fan!) Now that I am in my very early 30's, I understand it and appreciate it more. And still love it the same.
The two main characters are pretty much the only people you ever see. I have never seen it as a play, but the setting, etc. make it so that you can definitely see it as one.
Through a mix up, Doris and George are accidently forced to spend the first weekend together. By the end of the weekend, they wind up coming back again and again.
It shows their love growing and blossoming. They discuss their spouses and their children, their lives. She even shows up pregnant with her husband's baby. They are each devoted to their spouses. This takes place in a time period is before it was not OK to divorce "just 'cause". It shows them changing physically and mentally. All the normal stuff that happens in your life from "early middle-age" to "older middle age".
This is definitely a "chick flick"! And what an awesome chick flick at that!
There is no overt sexuality, especially by today's standards, but I don't think it is really appropriate for kids to watch. They may start to wonder what IS Mommy doing when she is supposed to be going to spend the weekend at Grandma's????
This movie, like their love, is truly timeless!
