This is one of the best westerns to come along in many years. I watch for good westerns as there are so few produced any more. This one has the feel of being authentic in almost every way and the combination of Duvall and Costner is a perfect fit. The only error I noticed was Costner's revolver (six-shooter) in one scene firing at least eight times without reloading. See if you can find which scene I'm referring to. Other than that, I love this film and it's one I can watch over and over without tiring of it.

IF you enjoy the old cattle drive movies, then Open Range is one to add to your western movie collections. Real men who love the drive across the west free-grazen their cattle. Robert Duval and Kevin Costner team up and make this movie enjoyable....

Keven Costner, Robert Duval, Annette Bening and cast are superb in this Western.
The location is breathtaking. The additional features are equally as interesting and entertaining. The 2nd disc invites you into the actor's inner circle and that is a rare thing indeed. This movie is timeless in every sense of the word. These men are good hearted cattle men being sucked into a fight not of their making. They have character and principle's and they aren't going to let a greedy land baron hurt their friends or steal their cattle.
A town is made up of all kinds of people, just like the people in your town. Some are decent hard working people, kind hearted and welcoming while others are hateful and just as determined to make everyone miserable. There are things a whole lot worse than dying and you have to be ready to step up to the plate and stand on principle regardless of the risk. That is a life lesson and one we all have to prepare for.As usual Annette's internal imp was just waiting for the challenge. When "Charlie" said a short while after his proposal, " how's this gonna' work if you won't do as I say?" Annette and I both cracked up! She was superb as usual. This is a family western. Minimal violence and language. We liked the story line too. Its about a time in the West when open range grazing was legal(it still is in some states). This created tension between the ranchers and the open range cattlemen. We liked it so well we decided to purchase the DVD rather than renting each time we wanted to view the movie.

This is a must have for any collector or fan of western history or western movies. The acting is superb, especially Robert Duvall who has honed the cowboy personality to a state of perfection. The photography is exceptional and enhanced by the set location. The DVD includes an interesting History Snapshot of the Open Range Years with a collection of original photographs from history. Also included on the DVD is Costner's narration on making the movie, which increases the appreciation of this excellent example of motion picture art.

This is the best new western I've seen in along time!!! Kevin Costner's performence and directing right on, VERY realistic!! Just takes you back to this time in our history!! Robert Duval is.... what is there to say but he's one of the best in whatever he does!!!!!!!!!! The shotoout is real, no six gun shooting forever on one load!! I highly recommend this to anyone who loves the old western movies!!!!!!!

Kevin Costner and Robert Duvall are great together.
A group of Free Grazers drive there cattle into an area of open range and piss off a local rancher.
This movie rates a 5 out of 5 for me but I'm a huge western movie fan.
The movie has one of the best Gunfight scenes that has ever been filmed.
Running time 139 Minutes.
Rated R for Violence.
Not just a shoot um up they take time and make a good film.
Star's Kevin Costner, Robert Duvall, & Annette Bening
The 2 Disk set has many Special Features like Deleted Scenes.
I hope you enjoy the film it makes a great addition to any western collection.

Westerns are movies that I seem to always think I won t like, but end up liking once I see them. You d think after a while, I d drop this prejudice, and come clean about my affinity for the old west. But for some reason, I still hold out. Which is why I didn t give Open Range much of a second thought. For one, it s a western. And for another, it s a western with Kevin Costner. Although I like Costner, given he s in the right role, he is not exactly someone I will go out of my way to watch. Ditto for Robert Duvall and Annette Benning. Somewhere in the midst of "Open Range," the more-grand-than-not, would-be epic cowboy film of 1882 Montana, Robert Duvall's grizzled "Boss" Spearman and Kevin Costner's jaded Charley Waite are astride their mounts herding cattle to market against a mountain range backdrop that takes your breath away. Spearman makes a comment to the effect that the scene around them is "pretty as a picture." Waite chimes in with the segue, "And that's why someone once said a picture is worth a thousand words." Open Range is the kind of western that can be enjoyed by people who don't normally get into western movies. It is set twenty years after the civil war, and is about a small group of 'free grazers' who are moving a heard of cattle across open land. When they get outside a small town, they are not welcome and treated very poorly by the locals. To make matters worse, the local law enforcement is on the payroll of the wealthiest rancher in town. After one of the free grazers is killed and another brutally beaten, the other two (played by Robert Duvall and Kevin Costner) decide to settle matters...
