Pros:
The Acting over powers the story
Cons:
Worthy a try anyway
The acting is spectacular; Matt Damon is exceptional in his role as Edward Wilson, a CIA agent. He is tough and unbreakable. He puts his country before his family and even himself.
Angelina Jolie does a significant job as she completely sells her role as Clover a neglected cheated on wife but a devoted loving mother. And Robert De Niro proves that his directing can be as good as his acting. Other than doing a fabulous job in directing the movie, he fantastically executes the role of a power military General, Bill Sullivan.
Unfortunately, despite of the incredible job done by the actors, the story does not sell as well to me. Maybe it is just that I have seen movies with better cold war stories than this. I completely missed the point that the movie was trying to make and for that it lacked impact to me. There is murder, betrayal and sacrifice but not as intense as I expected in a cold war CIA movie. The suspense in the movie is not the kind that puts you at the edge of your sofa. You keep waiting for something huge to happen but when it does happen it is done with such easiness that it does not give any affection at all. It is completely out of humor, not even the bad humor.
But don't worry, the acting is so good that you will forget how poorly written the story is.
