  Best Movie of 2007

I love movies that keep you on the edge of your seat! When I first heard of the Departed, I didn't want to see this because I figured it comparable to the Titanic since Leonardo was in it. This movie is perfect from start to end. I especially like the State Trooper part in the film which stirred up some controversary. It was an added bonus to a spectacular film!
5/5 STARS!

I really do think I'm the only one...

The Departed is an unquestionably good film. But, movie of the year? Hardly.

Yes, it's Scorcese at his Scorcese-ist. Yes, the plot is mature, intricate, twisty, and altogether enjoyable. Yes, there are some pretty brilliant performances. But, Best Picture? Uhhh...

I'm obviously not hating (4 out of 5 is a good score), but I certainly wasn't blown away by The Departed. Take Jack Nicholson: For half the movie, he gives a brilliantly dynamic performance as a kind of mob boss, but he eventually devolves into just playing Jack Nicholson on coke. He was the Joker all over again. The plot didn't really grab me until the last third of the film, making me wish that some of the more dramatic interplay between the good and bad guys had been around in the first couple of acts. Still, that last third is pretty spectacular, fueled by absolutely brilliant performances from DiCaprio and Damon and Marky Mark. You will want to watch it again as soon as the credits roll.

Then there's this DVD. Of all the major DVD releases this winter, this is by far the weakest. Sure, the video and sound quality are spot-on, but where are the extra features? There are no featurettes, no behind-scenes documentaries, no comparisons to the Asian film upon which this is based...nothing. You'll get a couple of commentary tracks, and that's it. Even the packaging is lackluster (a basic DVD case with a fairly simple insert...whoo). If you truly enjoy this film, expect to buy a deluxe edition in a few years, as this is hardly definitive.

Everybody loves this movie. I guess I'm the only guy who just likes it.

A really good old fashioned film, with an excellent story and an unbelievable cast. This film really keeps you interested all the way though as you want to know what will happen to the protagonists, and how they will or won't get caught.

We have all seen All-Star cast films where they just did not gel, but Marty seems to have got a good performance out of everybody. You can tell that Jack Nicholson has been given huge leeway in how he wanted to take his character through the story, and as always seems larger than life, but do not mistake that for a recycled performance. Without giving nothing away, his meeting with Matt Damon in the cinema is certainly worth watching for novelty and imagination in introducing yourself to someone you know!!! This is the sort of film you come out of the theatre with a big smile on your face, and surrounded by good spirited chattering. There are twists but you do not lose track of events, and just lap up the quality that laces the film from beginning to end.

Sure it is not Goodfellas, but then they say that genius only touches you once....but this is head and shoulders above the best that most other directors can make.

Before seeing this, I knew I was in for a treat, but The Departed was even better then I expected.

The acting is outstanding. Leonardo DiCaprio gives what is quite possibly the best performance of his career. Even people who hate him say "Well, I don't like DiCaprio but he's pretty good here". Matt Damon and Jack Nicholson give their best since The Talented Mr. Ripley and As Good As It Gets. Mark Wahlberg serves as great comic relief and almost steels the show. And Martin Sheen is good, too.

The Departed is a fast moving, intense action thriller with great usage of smart humor, fantastic acting (as stated above), good character development, and the brutal Scorsese violence his fans love. Definitely one of the best films of the 00's.

The film will most likely be nominated for picture, director and adapted screenplay, and in my opinion, it deserves all three of them. DiCaprio and Nicholson also deserve nominations.

See this as soon as you can.

  Open for a sequel?
Review created: 03/01/07

There's no doubt that this was by far one of the best movies of the year. Actor strength alone would've carried it this far. (Nicholson is BRILLIANT, and DiCaprio shines like never before). A wonderful plot that you won't figure out even as the movie ends is the movie's best and worst aspects. Anyone seen Babel... well you know what I'm talking about. I'm not sure if the movie is left open for a sequel (doubtful) or if my own personal tastes just have a need for a definate ending. I walked away thinking they left the last 2 minutes off my copy of the dvd. Hours of perfection that left me hanging...

One Of the best action movies so far this year, and full of nothing but great actors, Jack Nicholson, Leonardo Dicaprio, Matt Damon, Mark Wahlberg and even martin Sheen with all them great actor what can you expect but a great movie. This is a must buy movie to add to your collection don't even worry about renting it would be just a waste to rent. Frank Castello (Jack Nicholson) is a big Mob guy who raises this guy Colin Sullivan (Matt Damon) from a kid to be a cop so he can help him from being busted from all his crimes. Now, Billy Costigan (Leonardo Dicaprio) as a kid grew up in a life of crime but he is an actual under-cover officer that no one knows about but two other Detectives which are (Mark Wahlberg & Martin Sheen)but anyway non one knows about him because he is hired straight in this way, and he is hired to be a mole into Frank Costello Gang to help bust him. This show will make you think about the law, and how corrupt it can really be. This is a really great action pack flick. I love it from A to Z. I give it a 5 out of a 5 rating.

The Irish Mob is back !! Widescreen - DVD
Review created: 02/26/07
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

The Departed brings the Irish Mob back on the big screen in this latest film by Martin Scorsese. This is the story of 2 Police Officers, one who is a mole for the cops in the Irish Mob and the other is a mole in the police department for the mob. Frank Costello (Jack Nicholson) is the head of the Irish Mob Family who raises a boy like his own son, and sends him to the police academy to become a cop. Officer Collin Sullivan (Matt Damon) helps out his adopted father by passing on police information to him. Officer Billy Costigan (Leonardo DiCaprio) infiltrates Costello's crew and passes on information to his superiors (Mark Wahlberg and Martin Sheen). This is called Martin Scorsese's best film since Goodfellas, but I would have to say that Goodfellas was better. There is alot of good action, and there is a good twist at the end. Overall it is a real good film. Definitely one to see for any gangster movie fan. Get the Widescreen Edition DVD on eBay today and check it out for yourself !!

Totally Unexpected - A Must See
Review created: 02/25/07
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

The Script/Plot

Where so many movies fail, this film shines. There is a clean plot line, a great cast, and great flow to this movie. There are a few twists in this movie that takes it frombeing a good theatre movie, to a HAVE to own movie. This is a must buy! This is not a boring movie. We recommend watching this movie uninterrupted.

The Cast

Matt Damon - A different role for him; viewers see a new side to Damon including a little of his comedic side.
Leonardo DiCaprio - Totally unexpected performance! His best role yet. He plays his character convincingly.
Jack Nicholson - Classic Jack; Powerful acting and self humor adds to the script.
Mark Walberg - Walberg has come a long way in his acting. Great supporting actor; he flows well with the other characters.

Problems/Critique

There is crude/obscene/hate language especially in the beginning of the film as the ground work/background for the movie is established. This movie does not have the typical ending. It is more "realistic" in these terms. As such, it may not make everyone happy.

Score: 4.5 / 5 - Hate Language

This is not the type of movie that I usually would pick to watch, however the star studded cast initially caught my attention. Minutes into the film, I was hooked. Foul language abounds (definitely not for the kiddies), but definitely a riveting movie. Several twists at the end, make this a must see movie.

The Departed

I know it's only February but The Departed gets 6 thumbs up from me and gets my vote for Movie of the Year.

Great cast, amazing script, twists, turns, action, excitement. This movie is perfect in every way. It's an edge of your seat thrill-ride from beginning to end.

DiCaprio, Damon, Nicholson, Wahlberg, Baldwin, and so on and so forth. The cast is so spectacular this movie just had no possibility of being bad. Martin Scorcese will win awards this year. That's a guarantee!

A final note though... this movie is rated 18A for a reason, it's got plenty of violence and extremely harsh language. It's definitely not recommended for anybody under the age of 16.

Final Verdict:

5/5

Worth buying?: Absolutely, The Departed is a must own.

IF YOU FIND THIS REVIEW HELPFUL PLEASE REMEMBER TO VOTE. Thank you.

Riveting Action Packed Tale of Good Cop, Bad Cop
Review created: 02/16/07
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This was a brilliant tale of good cop, bad cop. With twists at every turn. I usually don't like the action packed suspense movies and watch only to keep the husband company but I was at the edge of my seat the entire time.

Undercover Boston State Trooper Costagan (DiCaprio)was the black sheep of the department. Kicked out of the Academy his only chance at being a real cop was to take an assignment going on the "inside" with the mob in Boston. He accepts and goes on a long whirlwind journey with mob leader Costillo, played by Jack Nicholson. Known for some amazing performances this one was no exception for Nicholson.

The real Villian in a bizzare twist was not played by Nicholson but rather by Matt Damon. He played the Boston State Trooper assigned to investigate Costillo and bring him down. Unfortunately, Damon was involved and working for Costillo, informing the mobster of the departments every move.

In the mix was none other than a woman. Go figure. lol Both cops managed to be sleeping with the department psychiatrist. She never knows who to believe but is not aware that the two cops are on the same case until the end.

Costigan (DiCaprio) was in increasing danger as the rat continued to leak information. The department was torn as the right hand never knew what the left was up to. The FBI had their fingers in the pot and boy Oh boy what a mess it turned out to be in the end!!! I won't tell you have got to see for yourself!

Supporting actors and actresses were also great adding all the right fillers and details to keep you guessing. Casting was brilliant.

Watch and enjoy and click yes for my review. Thanks for allowing me to share with you!

  Scorsese's Best Since Goodfellas
Review created: 02/13/07(updated 02/26/07)
by:
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I've always liked Martin Scorsese's movies, he has done several types of movies and has shown that he definitely knows how to make good movies. When you see his name stamped on a movie, you know you're going to get quality work. And he's shown his versatility in directing unrelated films like Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, After Hours, The Last Waltz, Taxi Driver, The Last Temptation of Christ, The Color Of Money, Raging Bull, The Aviator, the list goes on. But what Martin is known best for are his gangster movies. From Mean Streets to Goodfellas, Casino, Gangs of New York, and now The Departed, he shows he knows how to make gangster movies. My personal favorite from Martin is Goodfellas (I've seen it a dozen times, and I think it's right up there with The Godfather for best gangster/mob movie of all time), but as good as Goodfellas is, The Departed gives it a run for its money. The thing I like about Martin Scorsese the best is he has a vision. He knows what works for him, and he stays with what he knows. And if he decides to go a different way, he definitely does his homework. He knows cinematography as well and knows what will look great on the big screen, and it looks just as great in the living room after you pop the movie in.

The Departed is an excellent movie with an excellent cast. Jack Nicholson, Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Mark Wahlberg, Martin Sheen, and Alec Baldwin all put forth performances so real that you believe that they are the characters. DiCaprio, Damon, and Nicholson steal the show with their great performances in great roles; but it's Wahlberg, Sheen, and Baldwin who complete the movie with their excellent supporting roles. Sometimes you see an excellent cast fall flat on their face (Ocean's Twelve), but Scorsese doesn't let any egos get in the way. He does an excellent job of keeping everyone within their own character, and the result is outstanding.

The Departed is similar to the movie Donnie Brasco with Al Pacino and Johnny Depp, but it's way more complicated. Complicated in a good way. It takes a while for everything to play out (it runs in at two and half hours), but it all comes together, and I'm glad Martin didn't skip out on the storytelling by making the movie shorter. I honestly don't know what could've been cut out. It's about a mole who gets inside the mob while reporting to police officers in order to bring down mob boss Frank Costello (Nicholson). Only problem is that he has a cop that's supposed to be on his side who's reporting back to Frank, so Frank keeps eluding the heat. Meanwhile, each side is trying to figure out who the mole is on the other side. There are all kinds of twists and turns which make this movie truly original and great, and it keeps you guessing all the way up to the climactic end.

It's nice to see that Martin finally got his Oscar nod. I cannot think of anyone in Hollywood who has done so much for the movie industry, and yet kept getting snubbed year after year. He finally got what was coming to him, just like the guys who get whacked in his movies, but in a good way. Goodfellas is still my favorite Scorsese movie (favorite movie period), but The Departed is right up there. I was actually kind of surprised to see that he won the Oscar for Departed; not because of the quality of the movie, but because of past snubbings. I thought maybe Scorsese's movies were too violent for the Academy. They finally got it right. Thank you.
