Pros:
a great movie

Cons:
a little slow in some parts.

Well I bought Gattaca on DVD last week when I found it on the cheapo DVD rack at my Wal-Mart one of my favorite movies I decided to pick it up. It was only about 10 dollars so it wasn t a bad purchase at all.

The movie
The movie opens up interesting enough we see a man named Gerome who is taking a bath in an incinerator he get s out off the incinerator and then lights it up. We hear a voice over narration of how great Gerome is actually is and how limitless is potential is. But then we hear that he is not Gerome but actually a man named Vincent.

See Gattaca happens in a not to distant future (50 to 100 years but no date is given) where genetic engineering has been mastered and now you can order your own genetically perfect child from your local genetics lab. Unfortunately for Vincent he wasn t order from a lab and was naturally born, and he lost the genetic lottery big time. Born with several illness including a bad heart he was shun by his parents, especially after they order his genetically perfect brother from a lab. Later in life Vincent get s sick of his life at home living 2nd best to his younger brother that he sets out in life. But with the genetic engineer elite who would want to hire a natural born person. All though Vincent is smart enough and bright enough to get into the space program Gattaca he can t get in because of his Genes.

That is when he contacts a man who gives he a new identity of Gerome a gentiatcally perfect man who broke his back when he failed to commit suicide. With Gerome giving him his blood and other bodily fluids Vincent easily get s a job in Gattaca and quickly raises through the ranks. A week before he can get his dream to go into space a murder at Gattaca and a misplaced eye lash points the finger at the real Vincent. Can Vincent keep his disguise has Gerome in front of the police long enough for him to fulfill his dream?

Now what I like about this movie is that it talks about a hot topic today, tampering with human DNA. And for once we don t get any of the religious aspect involved. The only time God comes in is when Vincent is called a God child, or in other words a child who was born in the world by god s hand and not by a genetics. It is also one of the only one that also doesn t have a war involved unlike other sci fi like Star Trek, and Gundam Seed.

This talks more of what happens when genetic engineering becomes the norm of society. How will we treat the ones that are Genetically superiors, will they get all the cushy jobs just because of the way they where born. And what about the inferior natural born s will they get past up and discrimated against because the way they where born. Why hire and train someone who you know might catch caner the next year and die, when you can hire a person who never catches cancer.

While the movie focuses more on the latter part with Vincents struggle at the beginning of getting into Gattaca. He s obviously smart enough because the blood that Gerome gives him only helps him get past the security screens. Once in though he impresses his supervisors at how well he can do his job.

The other part of the movie though focuses on the real Gerome, the one in the wheel chair. While he is genetic superior to Vincent. He s just has smart to thanks to his genetic engineering. But that s where is advantages end, has Vincent states early on in the movie Gerome had a different pressure in his life the pressure to be perfect. Gerome problem comes when he shows Vincent his silver Olympic medal. Gerome was never meant to be in 2nd place and we can assume that is why he walked out in front of that car. Gerome is a bit of a sarcastic pessimistic sort of personality, despite all that was handed to him at birth. Don t get me wrong Gerome is a likeable character, but we see why Vincent will succeed at where Gerome has failed.

The DVD.
For a cheapo DVD this one isn t that bad but it could be a bit better. It s a 2 sided disc one with the widescreen and the other side with the full screen version of the movie. The video quality in the movie isn t terrible but it could have been better, there is some fuzz and color distortion on the screen, but what do you expect from a cheapo DVD.

Has for extras there was more then I expected, we get a few deleted scenes, the trailer for the movie and a short featurette Has well has a few photo gallery s.

Final Recommendations.
Gattaca is one of my favorite movies of all time, and it s a great flick. It s only 10 dollars for it on DVD and defiantly worth a look at.
