I purchased this item through a seller, but when I received it, the unit did not work. I e-mailed the seller and got fast response on how to return the item and get a refund. So I was pleased with the way the process was handled.

I bought online through ebay to save a little money and the unit has been at a shop for warranty work longer than I have used it. I'm hoping to get it back sometime this next week but the whole process is a little annoying. Maybe I got a lemon? Who knows?

This machine is easy to use and worked perfectly in the transfer of all my VHS tapes to DVD. The tape side handles tapes safely and rewind is very fast. Transfers to DVD look identical to the original tape on my high resolution projector. It would have received an EXCELLENT rating except for two reservations. First, the instruction book is worst I have ever encountered. The simple procedure of copying a VHS tape to DVD is explained with such dense and confusing complexity as to make it almost impossible for a first time user to sucessfully make a transfer. It is actually VERY easy and could have been explained in one sentence. In fact, upon powerup, the machine is already set for that purpose. All you have to do is insert the tape and find the place where you wish to start the copy and stop the tape. Next you press the "Copy" button for three seconds and press "Play" when prompted; its that easy. Second, it would be nice to be able to pause and edit without creating a new chapter on the DVD. This is not a big deal; only a minor annoyance, since it has no effect upon playback.

Panasonic DMR-ES46VS DVD Recorder / VCR Combo
Review created: 08/02/07

Having a new HD TV meant the appeal of "upconverting" our DVD playback was now possible. There are tons of really cheap DVD players that offer this, but I saw this in my searches and seized upon killing several birds with the one stone. We have about 200 Disney and other childrens VHS tapes (remember when that was cutting edge?). We have the means to preserve the library (with the addition of a specific device to bypass security encryption). Now we have yet another remote (my wife's horror) for the digital tv reception. This unit simplifies our setup. 2 boxes, 3 remotes, but that covers everything.
The Panasonic connects to the tv with HDMI cable, so DVD and VHS playback is as clear as possible with older media. It will play HD DVD's (but not blu ray).
We can record tv to either DVD or VHS as desired. And the unit will one-touch copy home made VHS to DVD or vice versa. It will not let you copy protected media. (There are fixes for that problem.) While recording, the unit offers "smart" speed sensing. It will copy at the highest resolution for the amount of blank media space remaining. It does not "finalize" the DVD's (so you can play in other machines} until you tell it to. So you can add short programs together, or chain compact vhs tapes or camcorder data. It also has a Smart Media slot, so you can pull video or music from your PC (once you have it on MMC or SD card) and transfer to DVD or CD.
Summarizing, you have a high quality DVD recorder/player, VHS player/recorder, HDMI, component and S-video outs, 2 component/S-video inputs and a memory card slot. This unit should handle all your A/V creativity.
Drawbacks are few as far as I'm concerned. The manual is lengthy, but it has all the answers, just needs some rereading at times. There's no way for a universal remote to accomplish all the features the unit provides (drive selection, speed selection, disc management, etc.) so you're stuck with one more remote. Depite these few wishes, the price I paid versus the amount of value is a tremendous bargain.

Great product, but poor owner's manual

If not for the confusing owner's, I would have rated this product excellent. Fortunately, you can call the help line (more than once!) and they will walk you through your questions. Copying vhs tapes to dvd is very easy. I worried I might copy the wrong way and have a disaster, but the on-screen instructions are very clear. Recording off cable was a little tricky at first, but I finally figured it out. You do have to "finalize" the dvd in order to play it on another dvd machine. Once you finalize it, there's no going back. It's final! Use the RAM disc that comes with the machine to record over and over. I've had a little experience copying little camcorder tapes to a disc and have been successful. The key to this machine is taking your time to study the system and don't be afraid to call the help line.

  A happy customer

I bought this product because like most people I wanted to convert as many of my VHS tapes to DVDs as I could. I Figured that I would not be able to do a 1/3 of them because of the quality of the old tapes. To my surprise that figure was lowered to 1/10th or lower of my whole collection. I have created a lot of space in my storage cabinet. This machine overall is way above average. The one touch recording is so easy that a small child could really do it. The only bad thing is that in extended record of 6 hrs and 8 hrs it is not as sharp but it is still okay. I guess I am saying that if you have something to record 4 hrs or less it is like going to the movies. I have a HD television and the quality is still very good. It is worth a try.

  A GREAT PURCHASE

Good old reliable Panasonic. I'm so glad I didn't rely on the bad reviews, as the one I got hooked up easily. I didn't use the directions, and I programmed it from the get go and actually started doing DVD recordings immediately. Couln't be better. Believe me after a horrible experience with another brand which was very expensive, and had to be returned three times( it still doen't work) and miserable customer service, and buying all kinds of various DVD's per their request, this WAS A GREAT PURCHASE. AS far the "no eject" button on the remote, READ THE BOOK!! The VCR can be ejected by using the remote. This unit is a pleasure to use, so much so that I bought a second one for the bedroom and no problems so far. P.S. I"m 61 AND blonde!!!

I would buy this again. Maybe so far its just cause I was happy to
very forcefully throw out my old one.

Pro: every thing seems to be working. Ownership 3 weeks.
could be my imagination but I think the picture quality has improved
considerably for playing cd's and tapes.

Con: menu selections not 100% clear, but better than most I have seen, minor
problem. Manual layout is very unorganized. you really have to search
everything to find some of the simple anwers.
channel switching a tad slow.

  DVD/VCR Recorder gives bad "Image."
Review created: 07/03/07
by:
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

The recorder was exactly what I wanted, or so I thought. This was a Panasonic DMR-ES46VS and it will record from DVD to VCR, vice versa, or from an external source. I need this for my work. The unit was a "refurbished" model, which I have bought in the past and have had no problems with refurbished units. This one was DOA and the seller had me send it back - exactly like he said he would do. He replaced it with another "refurbished" Panasonic recorder - and guess what - it arrived DOA also. The seller had me send it back and gave me a refund; however, I was out two return shipping costs of $25 each. The seller was good about the entire transaction and lived up to his agreement. The problem being the DOA Panasonic recorders. It appears that Panasonic is not properly refurbishing their products. By the way, I went to a local store and bought a new unit (Panasonic)which happens to work great - at twice the price.

  Awesome Unit Panasonic

I just got a big screen LCD with HDMI input and wanted to be able to watch my wide screen dvds in better resolution than just the normal. so this seemed like an ideal choice and it was. Now I can watch my favorite dvd movies on High Def when it upconverts to 1080i and through the HDMI hookup the video and sound have never been better.

Thanks.

  Good Purchase

I had been looking for a good DVD/VHS Combo both on and off line. The ones in the stores were either too pricy or didn't have the features I was looking for. After reviewing the Panasonic DMR-46VS I bought one on E-Bay.It had most of the features and being refurbished brought the price down to an affordable purchase. So far I am pleased with it and would buy again from E-Bay and also recommend it to others.

This unit has a good reputation and is better than average quality. It was purchased for several reasons. The price was good. I can transfer all my VHS tapes to DVD's. It replaced two boxes with less wiring. I would reccommend this DVD combo.
