RV (2006, Blu-ray Disc)

RV is a 2006 comedy starring Robin Williams. We have been waiting for the DVD release of this movie with hopes of an enjoyable movie. It lived up to it's promise even though the film was a bit cheesy also.

Lights, Camera....Action!

RV is about a family who is planning to go on a summer vacation to Hawaii before the kids go back to school. Bob Munro (Robin Williams) has promised this trip to his wife, Jamie (Cheryl Hines) for some time now. The kids are excited too, for as teens they are looking forward to hanging out at the beach. Bob's boss has other plans and tells him you either attend this meeting in Colorado or you are fired. Bob hesitates to tell his wife and instead changes direction of the family vacation to the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. To top off the surprise to the family, he rents an RV to make the trip in.

The adventure begins as soon as they pull out of the driveway. Bob has never driven an RV and this paired with Robin Williams is some funny stuff. The family also meets some very strange people along the way.

Will Bob's secret be safe from the family? Will he keep his job? You'll have to watch it to find out!

My Thoughts On RV

I've always enjoyed any movie with Robin Williams. He is a funny guy and you can't help but laugh at his antics. I found this movie to be good but not a classic. The plot was very simple and there were a few places where you just wondered why they even put that shot in. For instance, the old seat belt trick getting stuck was used in the RV. This was ok the first time shown, but it is repeated in the movie and gets old real fast. I guess the director was running out of things to pull a laugh?

I thought the roles of the other family, the Gornickes, was well cast. They were really funny and kept us laughing as much as Robin Williams. Jeff Daniels played the role of Travis Gornicke, whose family was one-of-a-kind to put it mildly.

Robin Williams had some very funny scenes in the movie too. I won't go into any details because I don't want to spoil this movie in case you haven't seen it. In comparing this movie to other Robin Williams films, this one is not quite top notch, but not the worse either. Although, this movie is funny and certainly worth watching, I didn't feel like it was up to the standards of say, Mrs. Doubtfire. It will provide entertainment in the way of crude humor for almost the entire movie length and worth at least one viewing.

The one fault that I found with RV was the lack of chemistry between Robin Williams and Cheryl Hines who played his wife.

Even though the location in the movie is told as being in the Rockies in Colorado, the film was shot for the most part in various parts of Canada. The scenery of the mountains is gorgeous and I for one, had no clue of the actual filming location until reading up on the making of the movie. There were also some scenes shot in Los Angeles, CA.

Recommendation

RV is a comedy filled with crude humor. Robin Williams fans will especially enjoy this movie. It's not one of his best efforts but as good as you can get with a script like this. I give RV 4 Stars.
