Can someone please come up with an alien movie that's totally original? I can't imagine all of Hollywood's screenwriters have no unique ideas (so they all bite off older movies...)!
Plot:
A spaceship gets hit by some little meteors and ends up crashing on an uninhabited planet. Or so they think...
The survivors are Fry the co-pilot, Johns, Iman (a Muslim holy man) and three followers, two miners, an antiques dealer, Riddick, and a young "boy" (a gender confused girl).
Shortly after recovering from the crash they realize that Riddick has gotten loose. He poses a threat so a bounty hunter named Johns, posing as a cop, searches for him.
People start dying pretty early in the movie. The first is one of the two miners, a man, who's digging a hole to bury some stuff near a cluster of tall mud/rock mounds. They turn out to be more than just a part of the landscape as the miner quickly gets shredded.
Riddick is eventually found and makes a deal with Johns to help them all survive the harsh environment.
The planet they crashed on is very convincing and looks great. It's very arid desert with little water. This is because there are three suns that provide almost eternal daylight. Except for the rare eclipse which blocks the sun and provides an opportunity for the planets natives to hunt! Of course, as fate would have it, the starship crashes shortly before one of these rare eclipses is about to take place.
During their search for food and water, the survivors (minus one miner) stumble upon a small abandoned settlement. This is where they learn about the eclipse, the light sensitive aliens (one of Iman's followers gets killed), find water, and locate a jeep-like vehicle and a ship to get them off the planet. But first, they have to go back to the crash-site to get batteries for the ship and get the rest of the survivors.
Soon, the planets start to align and block out the sun. It's a very impressive scene that, if it were real and you were actually there, would be visually stunning! But they aren't able to load all the supplies onto the solar-powered jeep vehicle before darkness descends.
The aliens awaken!
The second person to die is the second miner, a woman, that gets torn in half by the aliens on her desperate sprint toward the crash site to seek shelter.
The aliens make chirping noises that help them locate prey. Their vision is motion sensitive so if you hold still they can't really see you. Unfortunately for the miner, she decided to continue running away from the aliens.
The group stays in at the crash site for a while hiding in the wreckage, but the aliens know they are in there and break in. The group decides to take a bunch of lights and carry the batteries for the ship and make a run for it.
As you can imagine, this is where the action really starts. And this is where the bodies start droppin'.
Four people survive till the very end. One dies shortly before making it to the ship and three escape the horrifying planet. To find out who...watch the movie!

Final Comments:
This is no Alien (w/ Sigourny Weaver) but it is fairly good. If you're really bored this might be just what the doctor ordered. I liked the look of the aliens in Pitch Black, they're like hammer head sharks. They're also cannibals! During a major solar eclipse the aliens creep from their lairs to wreak havoc on the planet.
If you go in with low expectations, like I did, then you'll probably enjoy it. But if you go in expecting something revolutionary then you'll be dissapointed. I was surprised by the movie's success which is why I caved in and watched it. The movie directors and studio was clearly surprised by it's relative success too. Pitch Black cost about $20 million and did over $40 million not including foreign markets. So they decided to come out with an animated interlude and a sequel - The Chronicles of Riddick which costed a ton and didn't go over too well. Remember, this is a Vin Diesel movie...that explains a lot.
Another thing, this movie was touted as being super-scary and it totally wasn't.
In any case, give it a shot. I still think you'll find some enjoyment in watching the film. It's not a total waste.
