Pros:
I laughed so hard that tears came from my eyes, it's a fun movie to watch, it has Samuel L. Jackson & L.L. Cool J, the ending song by L.L. is a must-hear
Cons:
it wasn't the least bit scary; pretty predictable in a lot of places; the wet suit that they made Samuel L. Jackson wear did him no justice
In the time-honored tradition of man-enhanced animals going on a human killing spree comes Deep Blue Sea. Using a story line vaguely reminiscent of Jaws, Deep Blue Sea is about chemically enhanced sharks with a taste for anything that walks upright on two legs. Instead of a great white, we re presented with nature s latest spree-killers in the form of the Mako shark, which is normally a somewhat docile marine animal except when otherwise provoked. In the case of theses particular sharks (there are three in all), no provocation is necessary for their rebellious nature because they have been enhanced both intellectually and physically and all in the name of science.
Beneath the glassy surface lies a world of swimming monsters...
The Moral of the Story:
As we see in the movie, not only is man plagued with an incurable desire to play God through scientific measure, but so is woman. The sharks have been experimented on by Dr. Susan McAlister (Saffron Burrows), in order to find a cure for Alzheimer s disease and any other type of human degenerative brain disorders; but unknown to her colleagues, the only way any of her research will work is if she increases the brain and body size of her test sharks to at least four times their normal physical proportions. Things seem to be going well on the surface.... she has a state-of-the-art facility in the middle of the ocean and a good crew of helpers: Janice Higgins - head biologist (Jacqueline McIntyre), Carter Black - shark wrangler (Thomas Jane), Tom Scoggins - engineer extraordinaire (Mike Rapaport), Sherman Preacher Dudley - master chef (L.L. Cool J), and Jim Whitlock (Stellan Skargard) - director and chief scientologist. (And they all live happily ever after under the sea at the three-story Aquatica Research Facility....for now that is). All they need to make their research dreams come true is to get the largest pharmaceutical company in the world, Khalmera Pharmaceuticals, to give them a grant so that they can market their product worldwide.
The company, although seriously interested, sends their chief representative, Russell Franklin (Samuel L. Jackson), to check their materials and make sure that everything has been done according to federal requirements, and from the moment he sets foot on their facility everything goes awry. (I decided it was his fault...he was obviously cursed by someone he d rejected in the medical world and brought his bad mojo with him) They show him the facility and take him on a run of their tests and that s when everything hits the fan. Apparently the sharks were waiting just for the right moment to make their attack and they chose that particular weekend to do so because 1) the normal full crew had been depleted to a bare minimal staff, and 2) there was a huge tropical storm that was going to hit that weekend. Hmmmmm.....ya know, this really reminds me of another movie besides Jaws. I know! Jurassic Park! Remember in J.P. nothing happened until the weekend that they decided to go down to minimal staff and they had a big tropical storm too? So what we have here are velociraptor sharks!!!! The male sharks tear down all the surveillance equipment and destroy part of the communications so that no one can fully talk with the tower, and while the crew has the female in custody (so they can finalize their tests) the other two sharks wait for her signal. This comes when Jim gets too close to her after the tests prove successful, and she takes a chomp out of his arm (so much for the tranquilizers that she was supposed to have been on). She does a good job tearing up the place, but before Carter can destroy her, Susan releases the shark back into the ocean. (Research before lives). They call 911 to come and send a chopper to get Jim and after much struggling, they get him hooked up to the rescue cable, but the weight of his gurney causes the cable to snag and with all of the wind pressure from the storm, the chopper ends up crashing right into the main tower, which in turn destroys the majority of the above water part of the research center. Of course this means that now all the communications are down for good as well as the main power, so they re working on emergency life support systems (Jurassic Park....). Now it s man against his...err....her invention and everyone scrambles to get to the surface before the sharks eat them. As the rest of the movie goes on, we see the band of survivors dwindle as the sharks pick them off one by one. But there is a golden side.... the sharks are starting to lose their numbers too. Preacher toasts one in the kitchen and then Susan electrocutes another one. That leaves just the female Mako on the prowl. (Geez.... Jurassic Park again! Remember the lead Raptor was a female?) The question now is who will survive? Man or the man-made killing machine?
My Thoughts on DBS:
I thought that Deep Blue Sea was extremely hilarious and... extremely predictable! My brothers and I laughed our heads off at the supposedly suspenseful action scenes and could tell who was going to get eaten next, where they would bite the big one, and how they would get chomped - and we didn t even have a copy of the script (not that it was necessary to have one). I seriously thought that this plagarised Jurassic Park in a BIG way, but then again... so has any other chemically enhanced animal movie since the release of J.P. The cast did their parts as well as could be expected with the low-budget script, and anyone that wasn t necessary eaten early in the game (not that you were able to form any sort of attachment to them) left us with the final cut of comedy, machismo, and sex appeal. You ll notice that I left off intelligence and that s because intelligence was no where in the film. What confused me the most about the film is the category that the rental place had it listed in: HORROR. Hmm.... does not compute. Take it from me, this is NOT a horror film - it doesn t even come close to being one. If you re looking for a horror film, check out anything that s recommended by my two favorites: Mike_Bracken or Psychovant. Who knows... maybe my little brothers and I are morbid or something, but I didn t find this to be scary nor did I even jump a bit, so you can rest assured that you won t be afraid to go to the beach after watching this. If you re looking for a film that has action and comedy galore then I recommend a viewing of Deep Blue Sea with a side order of Gorton s fish sticks!
