  Motorola W315 - Simple/Basic Phone
Review created: 10/05/07(updated 08/03/08)

I have bought 3 of these W315's (for my mom, and 2 sisters), so I must like the phone ok :)

It's a simple/basic phone, without all the fancy features (such as cameras) that raise the price, and add to the likelihood that something will go wrong.

It's a folding phone, therefore the buttons don't get pushed accidentally (my sister likes this, because her old phone dialed 911 twice while in her purse).

Also, it uses a mini-usb power connector, which is less problematic than the older-style power connectors on older Motorola phones.

Also, the phone supports both digital & analog towers - analog drains your battery faster, but the analog signal travels farther, so you're more likely to get a signal when you're stranded in the middle of nowhere.

Now the bad news: The FCC will stop requiring wireless companies to support Analog in Feb 18, 2008, and Alltel (along with most other carriers) will probably stop supporting Analog signals after that time (see http://www.fcc.gov/cgb/consumerfacts/analogcellphone.pdf for more details). After they stop supporting analog, then this phone really has no advantage over a simpler/smaller all-digital phone.

Also bad - my mom's phone just "stopped working". It was still under the 1-year Alltel/Motorola warranty, so they replaced it (but it took over a month).

Also, Walmart sells the W315 for $40, for their "Simple Freedom" prepaid plan.
But rumor has it you have to get the "Subsidy Code" or re-flash these phones,
or something, to be able to get them activated under another service.
To avoid problems, make sure to ask the ebay seller if the phone they're
selling was one of these $40 prepaid, or not (could be problematic getting
it switched over! - buyer beware)

I hope you find this info useful! :)

-----

August 2008 - these phones are still working well for my mom & two sisters.

The phone has a great look. Nice rubbery texture helps from dropping and scratching phone. Very clear LCD, nice displays, great colors. Has all the functions needed, We bought this phone as a first cell for our very young teen daughter with the thought that if she lost it, no big deal.

We are a little disappointed in this phone. My husband and I rely on the speaker phone to do business. The quality is so poor, that many conversations are not able to be understood or heard. Of course, the normal audio can be very abusive to the ear if you remember how people's voices vary. We do not like the ringtones at all. They are poor quality, all of them. The address book works nicely, better than the last phone. Some features are pretty difficult to find, but that is pretty typical with cell phones. Plus, it does not have the capacity to vibrate AND ring simultaneously that I can figure out, a feature we also rely upon!

  Excellent Phone!

I like it because the audial is so clear and one charge lasts all day. My last phone was so bad that I would be in the middle of a conversation and it would shut down because the battery would go dead. On that old phone, you could talk for about fifteen minutes tops, before it needed to be re-charged. The reception is better on my new Motorola than on my old phone, however, it is not as good as on other cell phones I've seen, however, that could just be my service provider. There are some places like at the courhouse, were I suspect they have microwave transmissions, and on mountain tops, where my cell phone does not function. I've dropped it now several times with no bad results, so that is very good. I with the keys were a little larger, but that will just take some getting used to. All in all, it was worth every penny, it is an excellent phone!

Bought phone for my parents. Like how easy it is to use without all the extra bells and whistles that they do not need. Small and easy to carry in pocket. Functions like a Razr, but without the camera.

the phone works great. I bought this phone because of its simplicity to use and its durablity. Before buying this phone I shopped around and compared it to other phones, and this one had the features that would work for me.

I love this purchase. I got it at a very good price and it fit the description exactly. This phone was listed as almost new and its exterior was flawless with very low user minutes. I purchased this phone because I repair and sell Metro PCS cell phones so I buy a lot of my inventory from e-bay. Every purchase its a gamble when I buy phones so it was really a pleasure getting this jewel.

This is a great phone and Simple Freedom is a great service provider. The phone has a lot of neat features and also includes Alltel's Axcess services! The phone retails at Wal-mart for only $35 so I'd buy it there instead of paying $80 on eBay.

Great simple phone with good battery life. Do you have problems with your razr dropping calls (alltel users)? Here's the answer hardly any dropped calls. Don't need a camera or bluetooth? Here's a great phone.
