Pros:
Character chemistry, great soundtrack
Cons:
Not Bruckheimer production quality...probably because it's produced by Clark Johnson
Alright -- let me go ahead and give a quick synopsis:
We begin with a hostage scene at a bank in L.A. Jim Street (Colin Farrell) and his partner Bryan Gamble (Jeremy Renner) defy their orders to hold once they get inside the building. At the same time Gamble takes out the suspect with the hostage, he shoots the hostage in the shoulder.
Thus Street and Gamble are taken off S.W.A.T. Street takes it with dignity since being a cop is his life, but Gamble goes crazy and is kicked off the force entirely. Street ends up making a deal with the captain since it was Gamble who disobeyed orders. Street is on weaponry detail for a few months, fixing weapons and shining boots.
Sgt. Dan Hondo Harrelson (Samuel L. Jackson) is brought back to form a S.W.A.T. team under his own command:
with Street,
David Deke Kay (LL Cool J)
TJ McCabe (Josh Charles)
Chris Sanchez (Michelle Rodriguez)
Michael Boxer (Brian Van Holt)
If the team screws anything up, Hondo and Street are off the force completely (courtesy of Capt. Fuller, of course, what a s.o.b).
The movie gets going when drug lord Alex Montel (Olivier Martinez) -- wanted in over a dozen countries -- is caught in L.A., pulled over for a broken taillight. On his way to jail he tells the press that he will give $100 million to anyone that gets him out. Needless to say, there are a lot of people even only in metro L.A. that will take the chance at getting the loot. On the way to transporting Montel to the Feds, a band of thugs attempt to get Montel. Fortunately, S.W.A.T. knew this would happen...
End up with chase through the sewers of L.A., landing a Leer jet on a four-lane bridge, and a massive gun fight to the death and you've got a great action flick for the summer. For me, however, this wasn't one of those summer blockbusters. After seeing Bad Boys II, S.W.A.T. just doesn't compare when it comes to action and direction. The special affects are good, but not great. It's more of a plain jane movie, but cool since it's got S.W.A.T. and great leading roles who have awesome chemistry together on screen. A bunch of smart-a$$ cops with a sense of humor helps the movie out a lot. Street lives for being a cop and he's got skill. Deke is the man with those abs and has two 'brats' waiting for Daddy to come home. Sanchez is a single mom always on the go to play cops and robbers. Boxer is always picking with Street since Street dated his little sister. TJ...well TJ has some screws lose in his head, but they're all great characters that you really get to know and care about. The soundtrack rocks, with music from Linkin Park and of course the theme you'll have stuck in your head..da nuh nuh, da nuh nuh, da nuh nuh.....though is it just me or does it remind you of the theme from Mission Impossible?
S.W.A.T. is the most honored and most professional police division in the world. We get the call to match up with the worst of the worst. Understood?
