Domino (2006, DVD)

Over the Top, Unbelievable Movie: Domino
Review created: 04/15/06

Pros:
of course Keira Knightley is hot

Cons:
unbelievable story line, too many unnecessary parts, choppy shaky picture,

I saw the previews for this movie and thought it looked like it would be amazing. A rough and tough chick bounty hunter kickin some bad boy butt seemed like a great movie to watch and make me feel like a powerful grrl.

I generally enjoy most movies, just for the fact that my movie standards aren t horribly high, but I wasn t 30 minutes in to this over 2 hour film when I looked at my husband and said This movie sucks.

I knew nothing about the real Domino Harvey story behind the film, nor did I care much whether it was a true story or not, The movie was just too over the top unbelievable, and like it was trying to be something way cooler than it was.

Keira Knightley is a very versatile actress, but I feel was just put in the role of Domino for eye candy only. Micky Rourke plays the typical tough guy seasoned bounty hunter, Ed, who is a father figure to Domino. Edgar Ramirez plays Choco a crazy bounty hunter that is in love with Domino.

I felt bad for Choco as he seemed to be the only one really doing any work in the movie. At one part when they needed to take a guys arm off, nothing was said, they just looked at Choco and he had to do it. I m thinking If Domino is such a down a$$ b**ch why doesn t she do it? Choco was their little dog for them play with.

The movie was all over the place, and I don t usually complain about that because I enjoyed movies like Natural Born Killers and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas but this was just an annoyance put in there to give it a drug induced feel. Dominos voice-overs got to me because a lot of them would be one line, and the last 2 words repeated for effect. I didn t need it repeated for me I heard it the first time!

One part near the beginning when Domino offered a guy a lap dance to get them out of potentially deadly situation, I just rolled my eyes. Like some gang leader would give up his buddy just to see her in her bra and panties. If he really wanted her it wouldn t have been pretty as he would have just taken her, not waited for an invitation. I also couldn t believe the love between her and her mother, as they were like night and day, and there is no way her mother would be neutral towards a daughter involved in crime and killing.

And the "bounty hunter of the year" award? Everyone cheering Domino on like she s the best bounty hunter to come along? Give me a break.

The story became hard to follow in spots as they would show something happening and than later show it didn t really happen and you have to try to catch up to the new storyline.

Great actors played small parts, but it made it seem like they were just thrown in there for star factor. Christopher Walken as the reality TV show producer, Mena Suvari as his assistant, Brian Austin Green and Ian Ziering playing themselves as 90210 actors, Jerry Springer as himself, and Lucy Lui is the FBI agent interrogating Domino throughout the movie.

There are a few times when Domino gets mad and punches people in the face just to show she s tough and doesn t want to take any crap form anyone, but most of the time she s just swearing with her English accent, smoking, rolling a coin along her finger and standing around looking punk rock sexy.

A lot of the film takes place in Nevada and California, with scenes at the Hoover Dam, The Stratosphere Hotel and Casino. One part that was really neat was when they were staying at this hotel they described as a hole I could tell right away it was Bonnie Springs Hotel at the Red Rock Canyon in Nevada which was where my husband and I got married. I didn t think it was a hole when I stayed there.

Overall this film really disappointed me with its unbelievable and twisty turny storyline. It was trying too hard to impress with its shaky picture and using Keira Knightley as a vixen to get everyone excited over watching her do anything. I couldn t get into it at all, and was left feeling insulted that I was supposed to find this cool

Directed by Tony Scott. 2 hours 8minutes
