Being a Terry Gilliam fan I wanted to like this movie, the story sounded so original and crazy - just like Gilliam's other work. But aside from the great special effects and some witty dialogue the movie was a great disappointment.
Slow moving and just plain boring. Really, just thinking about it makes me tired. Cannot recommend this unless to fans of Matt Damon and/or Heath Ledger.
Movie was OK....nothing to write home about..Fell asleep watching this one..............................................................................................................
Great movie simply for the relationship between Heath Ledger and Matt Damon as brothers; different role for the dashing Heath as a more reticent hero. I can see why some would be disappointed in the movie if they were expecting a different plot; it was very fantastical, but the acting was superb, and if you weren't expecting the Grimm tales; would appreciate the illusions to them. Scenery, costumes, and actors are an A+.
Although the story line was at first slow to develope, it all fell into place. Was not one of those movies where you know from the beginning the entire plot. Was everything-funny,scarey,heart wrenchingly sad,and a movie my husband and I both enjoyed. He liked the action, special effects,as well as the comedy. Actors and actresses really pulled it all together into a really good movie!
Well made, fun movie. Heath Ledger and Matt Damon show different facets of their acting ability. They are fun to watch -- Ledger in particular is very entertaining.
We really enjoyed the Brothers Grimm. It was a fun movie with great special effects. The price was definitely a good price. We bought this one on ebay because it isn't offered at Columbia House.
I had not seen this before purchasing but had heard about it. I was expecting a horror story based on the previews and ended up with a cute tale of two scam artists. My kids enjoyed picking out which childhood story the Grim Brother was writing based on the events in different scene of the movie. Hoever, this was a one-time watcher.
It's not the average film, but Terry Gilliam pulls a lot of fairy tales together to tell a tale. While it's not stupendous, it does have a lot of humor and depth to characters, like a lot of Terry Gilliam's work, but it isn't for everyone. i loved the film myself, but know it has a lot of detractors. I dsay it's worth at least a rental or borrowing before purchasing, but it is definitely on one of my wish lists.
I looked so forward into watching this movie and while it had some good parts it was a let down. I am a huge Brother Grimms fan, I love their stories but this movie was just, I dont know, not there. While I think it was neat seeing hints of other stories mixed in (like Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, etc) and there were some good action parts and great acting, the story line was just not there to keep interest. I think they could have done so much more with this movies story line and I dont know why they didn't.
I am rather disappointed with this movie. The plot itself I found to be very hard to follow, and even though I own this particular movie (as it was a gift), I STILL cannot comprehend what the main objective or point to the story is. The television previews made the movie look like it would have been very interesting and full of mystery/suspense. But I found it to be quite on the contrary. The story is very slow to develop (whatever the story is supposed to be). Rather boring and has no real logical sequence or purpose to the storyline, and what makes it worse is that the storyline is so very drawn out (long). Has some good visual effects, but that is about it.
This movie was way more then I expected. I got lost a little bit in the begining, but it all came together. The plot wasn't stupid and predictable like most everything out there and it was a visual fun ride. I really enjoyed it. I bought this movie because as a small child I always loved reading the Grims fairy tales, but as a small child a paid little attention to who the Brothers Grim might have actually been. This movie puts a face on the authors of these classic childrens tales, and better brings them to life. It is worth adding to your DVD collection, and more then that it is worth watching a few times, because you might miss a few things the first time you watch it. This is not the greatest movie I have ever seen, but it sure was a good one.
So get it, it's good it's fun, and it's worth watching a couple of times and swapping for. Nobody wants to swap a bad title, and this is swapper.
I got it as a Christmas present from my nephew, he is 14 and was trying. I can forgive him and tell him I loved it. The movie... no forgiveness. I will admit it was beautiful to behold, the special effects were wondrous, but the acting could use a few more years of practice, and the story was sadly spun. I must devulge that I am a reader, and their stories (The Grimm Brothers) have held me in their thrall my whole life and while 'tis said a movie can never compare to your imagination's work from a good book, never-the-less, I have seen movies that match and even surpass their paper and ink beginnings. This one didn't. Go watch Powwow Highway. The sleeper awakes!
This movie is very different than your average movie. It is "freaky weird", but pulls it all together in the end to make sense. Not recommended for young children (under 12 in my opinion).
This movie for lack of a better word "Sucks" its about fairy tales, and I like fairy tales, what in the heck was Matt Damon thinking even staring in a movie like this. there is no story line hardly and the movie just lacks any ability to keep you interested in it. man do not waste your money on this thing, I would sell mine on ebay but I dont want anyone to have to waste a red cent on it.
This movie had a great cast and a lot of potential. It's like Shrek in real life minus the humor and takes place in a gloomy medieval setting like in Sleepy Hollow.
There were 'good' moments but it was certainly not worthwhile seeing it in the theatres. I have not read the novel but have heard that it was much better than the movie. However, even if you have not read the book, you will still catch the references to fairy tales as well as the satire.
Please also note that it is not a children's movie even though it contains a lot of references to fairy tales. Children will likely find it scary and some scenes are a bit gory for younger viewers.
Strange flick. The story seemed somewhat disjointed much of the time. I may give it another try, only to pick up on things that I may have missed the first time around. But only if I have absolutely nothing else to do. And only when it's on cable--I wouldn't pay to rent it again, that's for sure.
Once upon a time... I saw a DVD called the Brothers Grimm and it was dark and grim. This movie is rated PG-13 for more than one reason. Actually it was was dark and grim but also imaginative but it could have used some help from the Grimm fairy tales in order to make it a more interesting movie. I can not say it was the worst movie I ever saw, but I can say I was somewhat disappointed, maybe because I expected more from Terry Gilliam, the director. He has made so many good movies that I enjoyed very much in the past. I hope he makes a better one than this next time. Watch it without the kids if you really want to watch it.
The best thing I can say about this movie was that I saw it during a matinee and did not pay full price. The movie, based on the Brothers Grimm could have been so much more than it was. In addition, it had a good cast that was left with an unexciting script. Not real bad - but not real good either.
It has been many years since I turned a movie off or walked out of a theater. I am just grateful that I rented this on DVD so I could turn it off after about 45 minutes. Being such an optimist, I kept thinking the movie would get better. The previews looked fantastic, but the movie portrayed the fairytales inaccurately and without purpose. The acting was poor and it held no intrigue whatsoever! Save your money and your time!!!

Brothers Grimm ~ Yet Again, The Mad Doc Bucks the Trend

Pros: Ledger and Damon, the story, everydamnthing
Cons: bah!
The Brothers Grimm are best known for having traveled around gathering fairy tales and having then compiled them into a book for all to adore. These are usually dark tales which are sure to cause nightmares. I, of course, adore them for it. This movie is not about that, though. Not really. This one takes Jake and Will and sets them up as bumbling (yet lovable) con men traveling about Germany and setting up things to look like fairy tales horrors have come to life. Then they, of course, come to the rescue of the townsfolk and save them from the various boogey men in a shower of elaborate...

The Brothers Grimm - Matt Damon and Heath Ledger Battle Witches and Enchantments

Pros: Unique movie with good cast.
Cons: Movie will be too different and strange for many people.
I usually see previews for movies that look interesting to me months before a movie opens. Some movies don t receive as much publicity so I don t know as much about them when the movie does open. I didn t see many previews for The Brothers Grimm or hear much about the movie before it opened. I did think that the movie sounded interesting. Since it opened, I have read mixed reviews that have mostly had a negative opinion of the movie. I did decide to go ahead and see the movie. I m glad I did because I ended up enjoying it. Wilhelm and Jacob Grimm traveled around Germany to small towns that...

The Brothers Grimm: An Unenchanting Story

Pros: A scary forest. Some interesting ideas
Cons: Ideas are not developed. Actors are not given direction.
To begin with, this is not a movie for children. While the Brothers Grimm wrote stories that have terrified and delighted generations of children, this movie is not meant for them. The real brothers Grimm wrote down folktales that were simple and focussed and proposed the idea that good would be rewarded and evil would be punished. The movie The Brothers Grimm lacks focus and that moral center. While their are nods to a number of the original fairy tales, this movie is not about them. I was really looking forward to seeing The Brothers Grimm. I generally enjoy Terry Gilliam directed films. I..

Matt Damon and Heath Ledger ARE The Brothers Grimm
Review created: 08/26/05

Pros: Damon and Ledger work well together, some good laughs
Cons: some of the special effects, some bad writing, seemed to just be lacking
I should start off this review by saying that The Brothers Grimm is not a movie that you should take children to. While it does have a fairy-tale theme to it, it takes a lot of liberties with the way things are told, and violence is the running theme of all of these tales in the film. It really does earn its PG-13 rating, and it really could scare a lot of younger viewers. The film itself centers around 2 brothers (Matt Damon and Heath Ledger), who have taken up a living removing enchantments from small towns and villages. The only thing wrong with that, is that they are the ones concocting...

The Brothers Grimm: Gilliam Lite
Review created: 07/30/06

Pros: Funny action tale with brilliant visuals
Cons: A bit slow and it does not quite click
There are a few things we know about director Terry Gilliam: he has a very dark twisted sense of humor; he likes historical accuracy, at least in sets and settings; his movies are always visually stunning; oh... and he almost always declares war on his production company. At least in these four regards, The Brothers Grimm does not disappoint. The Brothers Grimm takes us to in French-occupied Germany in the 1700s, at the height of Napoleons conquests. Here we meet fictionalized versions of the children's authors, Jacob (Heath Ledger) and Wilhelm Grimm (Matt Damon), who in real life wrote the...
