I never really wanted to see this movie, but one aspect of having Netflix is that you can keep a movie around a little longer in the hopes of talking someone else into seeing it. Well, I was that someone else. The premise of the movie didn t look like something I was interested in. The premise was odd in a goofy sort of way. Matt Damon and Greg Kinnear play Bob and Walt, respectively. They re conjoined twins who share a liver.
If you know what both of these actors look like, you re probably asking yourself how these two guys could pass themselves off as conjoined twins. Well, that s part of the joke. They re total opposites, personality wise. Walt is an aspiring actor, but Bob gets panic attacks, mostly at the thought of going or being onstage. Walt is outgoing, where Bob tends to be shy.
The plot was more complicated than I would expect. I tried summing it up in a few paragraphs, but it turned into a few pages, so I won t ruin the plot for you. Basically, the movie centers around two conjoined twins who decide to try to make it big in Hollywood and meet more challenges than they would expect. Most of the gags revolve around the fact that the twins are literally stuck on each other. For instance, they play on a hockey team in Martha s Vineyard as goalies. (They can block most of the shots by standing there.) Also, they own and cook at a restaurant in the beginning of the movie. (They have a pretty decent routine going on.) Cher plays herself as a Hollywood diva. A good part of the plot (as well as some of the gags) comes from that. The basic story is about how the twins fare in Hollywood, and Cher helps them quite a bit, even though that wasn t what she had in mind for them.
I ended up enjoying the movie about as much as I expected. The movie really revolves around the fact that the twins share a liver and are forced to put up with each other. (They could undergo surgery, but there s a 50% chance that Walt would die.) The conjoined effect itself looked convincing, although there were a few scenes that I found questionable. There were one or two scenes where the twins fight and they were able to move in ways I m not sure that they were supposed to. There was also a scene in a police station where one twin gets locked up and the other is free, but stuck on the outside to his brother. (It s kind of gross, so I won t go into it here. I ll just say you ll understand what I m talking about if you see it.)
I can honestly say that I ve never seen a movie like this. Then again, I wouldn t normally rent this type of movie. I can t really compare it to another movie. I m still not even sure whether or not I like it, and that s rare. I d almost be tempted to recommend it to a friend just so they could tell me what they thought of it.
