An Open World Experience You Will Never ForgetReview created: 04/20/08

Welcome to your second life. This game has so much stuff for you to do, you will actually be playing it for about 7 weeks in order to complete everything. The atmosphere and open-world feel to it is breathtaking. The graphics are wonderous, especially the outdoors. The part that I like about the game the most are the diverse missions. You will NEVER repeat a similar mission. Sure, you will travel through several dungeons, but each time it's for a different purpose and has a different feel to it. The entire game you will ask yourself "What do I WANT to do next?". There is no linearity to this game whatsoever. You do what you want, whenever you want, however you want. How Bethseda Softworks was able to do all this is mindblowing. But all of this comes at one cost, and one cost only: loading times. Loading times may seem like a nuisance. Loading will take less time if you don't accept the update that pops up everytime you turn on the game. The longest it take to load without the updates is about 40 seconds. Loading screens will only appear if you go into or out of and area. The size of the area you want to go to will effect load times. Room to room takes about 4-6 seconds. Room to city about 6-7 seconds. City district to city district about 15-25 seconds. City district to countryside 12-18 seconds. Countryside to city district 20-40 seconds.
All in all, the loading times definately shouldn't scare you away from the greatest RPG to date. This puts Assassin's Creed to shame. You do similar things as Altair, and then 1000 more weapons, spells, enchantments, bartering, speechcraft, and so much more!
Please, go buy this game and play this wonderful experience!

The Good
* Huge, lavishly detailed world offers tremendous amount of action and adventure

* Tremendous replay value, plus gorgeous graphics to make it easy on the eyes.

This is a rare and remarkable achievement--a huge, open-ended, complex, detailed role-playing game that's fun to play and a pleasure to behold. Oblivion not only delivers everything that earned the Elder Scrolls series the devoted loyalty of a huge following of fans, but also significantly improves on the weaknesses of its 2002 predecessor, Morrowind. Morrowind earned recognition for being one of the best role-playing games in years, but the immersive and long-lasting experience it provided wasn't for everyone. Oblivion is hands-down better, so much so that even those who'd normally have no interest in a role-playing game should find it hard to resist getting swept up in this big, beautiful, meticulously crafted world.
Morrowind was a tough act to follow, but Oblivion isn't just better--it's a lot better.
The Elder Scrolls series is known for its sheer size and depth. These are games that you could lose yourself in, spending hours exploring a fantasy world, traveling for miles, or just looking for minutiae, such as rare plants or hidden treasure. Oblivion lives up to this pedigree, putting you into a massive, cohesive, highly immersive world. You get to create your own character--the possibilities for customization seem limitless--and then explore the world as you will. There's a compelling main quest for you to follow, which takes about 40 hours to finish the first time through, but the majority of the game's content is peripheral to that main quest. You can root out evil in hidden dungeons, join and climb the ranks in a number of different guilds, visit all the different towns and try to solve everybody's problems, compete in a long series of gladiatorial battles to the death, break into someone's home and rob them in their sleep, get caught and face the consequences, contract a disease that leads to vampirism and then try to find a cure, buy a house, steal a horse, invest in your favorite shop, and, if you can believe it, there's much more.
So the breadth of content is as remarkable as ever, but the most important thing is this: The many types of gameplay in Oblivion are well-designed and deeply satisfying, even when taken on their own. That's the main difference between this game and Morrowind. This may be a role-playing game, but you could play it like a pure action game, or like a stealth game, or like an adventure game, and it'd still be at least as good as, if not better than, games that are specialized in these regards.
Oblivion does a great job of quickly introducing you to all these different aspects of play, successfully engaging you rather than overwhelming you. You see the world through your character's eyes, but a behind-the-back perspective is also available. Initially you just pick a name, race, and gender for your character, and the game opens with you stuck in a dungeon cell, being taunted by a fellow inmate.

Wonderful Game!This game is so neat,
You can do just about anything you want in this adventure game.
Your character is totally customizable, in all its attributes.
The game has beautiful graphics, and not just one storyline.

You'll be playing for hours with this game because there are so many quests that you can take and the environments ever changing terrain and enemies will keep you busy. Excellent action RPG which it was such a monster hit at E3 when it launched. Launched in 2006 but still a major hit 2yes later. If added with it's expansion pack, Shivering Isles, Boredom will be the least of your worries, overheating your Xbox 360 will be, LOL. Enjoy!

Great game! One that keeps you hooked for a long time!!Elder Scrolls Oblivion is great! If you love RPGs this is a gift from above! While it is a very long game you never get bored! There is so much to do and there is so much to explore. The missions and quests are fun and very addicting. This game keeps you hooked and never stops. While it does cost alot of money it is no questions worth every penny. This is a great game for everyone and is really enjoyable to play!

I am one of those that has now played this game for over 100 hours (yes, those are 100 hours of sleep I'll never get back), but can tell you the game provides a great experience. If you're looking for a 60-second thrill or a bloody gore first-person shooter, you clearly didn't read the description of the game. If you like RPGs and enjoy crafting a character over time, this is one game that won't disappoint. The game play is fantastic and the direction is limitless. I have even started over a few times (long story regarding Xbox live) and enjoyed "replaying" many of the same story lines and achievements.
Most importantly, it's interesting and you do find yourself mirroring your own life. If you want to be evil and kill and maim, do so, but I don't know why. If you want to be a galant knight, you can do that. I've found myself obsessing about the character's status (like some other good RPGs the various skills you develop are very interesting instead of the static "Level 4 - more hit points..." who cares?), weapons, armor and achievements.
As others have noted the graphics are simply amazing, the game play is great.
The only real cons are some long load times (during start-up for one, sometimes loading the cities or houses you enter) in between scenes and some parts of the game you should simply opt out of (the dumb lockpicks until you can find and get the skeleton key, the silly 'conversation game' where you need to make people like you and the scalability of the merchant bartering), but nothing can be perfect.
The add-on pack was also a great seamless integration. A bit odd (the story line was simply strange) but if you can't get enough, it's worth the few extra bucks for another 30+ hours of game time...

Oblivion is a very well made RPG that allows you to explore and do whatever you want, whenever you want. It gives you a great deal of freedom. You could do quests or just completely ignore them. There are so many cities to explore, things to do, and with new expansions it's a game that you can dump 100 hours into and still not be done.

This is the game I have been looking for since the day I got my xbox. I tried lots of RPG games, most of them were great, but with a HDTV and this game, you get next-gen graphics that will blow you away. Massive world with tons of game play. If your into RPG games this is a must have for your collection.

Simply AmazingI played this game at my friends and knew I had to get it. This game is amazing. The graphics are perfect and the quets are both exciting and fun. You hae a completly customizable character, his/her hair color, clothes etc. All in all i say this game gets a 10 out of 10.

GRAPHICS
The graphics in this game are amazing. From lush forests to tall mountain peaks, this game has it all. All of your weapons are shiny and pretty to look at and I just love to mess it up by smearing the blood of my enemies all over my sword. The physics are very good and the lipsyncing is practically lifelike. And the human faces do look pretty much like a real human which is definantly a step up from morrowind. And you wont just find the graphics at its prime in cities. Out in the wilderness there are tall trees, bright flowers, and flowing grass. Not to mention the occasional ruin. Compared to the 360 version though, the graphics made a slight improvement but nothing really to go crazy over.
GAMEPLAY
Well this is pretty much the only place where the game is slightly below perfect. I just am not fond of the whole enemies level up with you thing. I know it is just to keep the game interesting but still it just makes it seem like your not gaining anything from playing the game hours on end. Everything else is good though. Sneaking is now useful with the strategic critical damage system, and the unautomatic blocking again makes the game more strategic then just a polished up point and click. But what really gives the game its extreme awsomeness is how you can live the agme however you want. You actually have the ability to kill ANYBODY. But that doesnt mean you will just go slahing anybody you see. There are consiquences to every illegal action you do. Well that is if you are caught.
SOUND
This game really brings the section SOUND to a whole new level. There are litterally hundreds of hours of text read to you by half descent voice actors. And I dont just mean they say a few things and then you read the rest. Everything you see in words is read by an actual voice actor. Thats is not something you come across very often. And the music is nothing less than perfect. It really fits the medieval theme. It can go from peacful music while your walking in the forest to tense rugged music when you are fighting a tough enemy. And how can we forget the sound of metal clinging on metal or a helpless animals organs getting splatered eith a warhammer. It is all just realistic beyond belief. Sometimes you wonder what they had to do to get the realistic noises of death.
AI
Its great. Your opponent wont just randomly hit you, step back, hit you, athen step back again. They ready there sheild when its obviouse your about to do an attack, dont hit you when you blatently have your sheild up, and even use healing spells when their about to die. And the weaker people that your pick a fight with wont just stay there and die. If they know theyll get killed they will run away and go off to tell a guard. And even your animal enemies know what level you are and will stay away if they know theyll get slaughtered. Overall I was very impressed with the AI.
