Pros:
Homoerotic Humor and it teaches tolerance
Cons:
The Love Story is unrealistic
I was amazed that this movie received such low ratings not only on epinions, but almost every movie critic hates it. I am not saying that I love it, but it exceeded my expectations about the movie. Although I can t explain everything, I can try to account for why people didn t like it.
Homoerotic Humor
If you haven t heard already this movie is about two straight guys who end up in a gay cruise!
So if you are even the slightest bit homophobe, this movie isn t appropriate humor. If you are a homosexual who is offended by the queeny type then this isn t your cup of tea.
If you are a straight guy who is comfortable with your sexuality, then prepare for some laughs. The gay jokes are endless and sometimes politically incorrect. The jokes are actually light homoerotic remarks. For example there is a scene where the guys in the lobby are singing Hall and Oates Man Eater song with the lyrics changed from she to he. I don t want all the jokes to be ruined, but let s just say a certain James Bond is also in the cruise. In other words many of the gay jokes you have heard during your lifetime are displayed throughout this film and done tastefully.
Tolerance
Even though gay people are the butt of the jokes in this movie, the director and the casts also take responsibility and teach tolerance of homosexuality. I am not saying the message is like a public service announcement which can ruin the movie. Instead the theme of tolerance is pushed in between jokes and is more on the subliminal level.
You will also be able to see Horatio Sanz s character go through subtle changes throughout the movie. I don t want to expose too many details about what happens, but it is a realistic way of showing how someone can tolerate being in a situation that has a majority of gay people. So for the people involved with the production of the film, my hats are off to them in trying to make this world a more tolerant place.
Love Story
Yes the love story is corny! It is one of the fewest things that seem very unrealistic in this movie. You have better chances of hitting a trifecta (picking three horses in a horse race in their proper winning) in a horse race than seeing a lesbian fall in love with a straight guy. I know it sounds harsh, but they made Roselyn Sanchez fall in love with Cuba Gooding Jr. at the drop of the dime. If there was a love story involved it should have taken more time and had some complexities involved before any transformation occurred.
Conclusion
For a love story, this movie isn t my cup of tea. For a slapstick comedy movie expect your funny bone to be tickled.
