BACKGROUND
In 1968 Mel Brooks directed his first major motion picture The Producer it barely broke even. http://www.epinions.com/mvie_mu-1016819
In 2000 he re-created it as a musical comedy in Chicago and it was a hit, now it is on Broadway and its the first true block buster since 1983! I should know I've been one of people that on that block and it is busting at the seems, every twenty minutes they are there asks us not to block the sidewalk
In the day and age of Ticket Master and the Internet where most tickets are purchased away from the theater box office it is almost impossible to truly be a block buster, yet every day the line for "future ticket sales" is out the door and across the block. My friend purchased tickets last month for February 12th 2002!
About me
For 3 weeks in a row I have tried to get cancellation tickets, every show has tickets that are canceled or held aside for "PEOPLE MORE IMPORTANT than YOU". Tickets that aren't used get sold about 10 minutes before the show during previews, this ment about 10 a show now that it is a hit, 4 lucky souls might get it.
The first time I was 2 people short of getting in, the last time I got a there is time, but was $5 short of having the $100 I needed. The PAIN
So when I saw the sign at Barnes and Nobles on my way back, The Producers $14.99 I jumped!
A classic Musical Comedy
Mel Brooks has re-created something missing on Broadway the classic Musical Comedy. New York has enough French Revolution enough crazy love sick deformed men hiding under opera houses, enough people living and dying of aids in America. We wanted a light comedy, and Mel Brooks delivered!
The Producers staring Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick is about a failed Broadway Producer Max Bialstock who realizes he can make more money with a big flop than a hit. His goal to find the worse play the worse director and the worse dancers.
The play he finds Spring Time for Hitler
The director Roger de Bris.
Roger is a transvestite and will only do Spring Time for Hitler if he can "KEEP IT GAY" Track 8
The raise $2 million want to spend $100,000 and retire. Only one thing could possible go wrong, the show is a hit!
Max goes to prison but his partner escapes, only to turn him self in later. While in Prison they produce Prisoners of Love. Prisoners of Love wins them a pardon from the Governor and they produce it on Broadway their second hit in a row!
The Music
This show is Classic Broadway and the songs are all very CLASSIC, and yet original at the same time. The derive from a style with out being a copy of any existing songs. Its really a minor miracle to pull off.
The only way to describe what Mel Brooks did, is to say He paid homage to the past glory of Broadway by creating a modern show using the styles and sensibilities of a better era.
Yet it is very Mel Brooks, hidden in songs like "The King of Broadway" Track 3
MAX
I use to be the King the king of old Broadway
Workman, Bum, and bag lady
We Believe you, Thousands Wouldn't
We believe you, ev'ry word
We believe you, Thousands couldn't
We Believe each world we've heard
.....
Max
The King of OLD Broadway
Blind Violinist
it's good to be the King
Just having lines thrown in, like Mel Brooks catch phrases are part of the fun of this CD.
The CD book
The book has a few pictures, I wanted more. It has 10 pages of history about the show and a small description of the scenes and how the songs interact. Then of course their is a complete libretto
