Pros:
Very intriguing, focuses on a controversial issue, good acting
Cons:
A tear-jerker, not really a guys type of movie
I would like to recommend "Losing Isaiah" to anyone who loves drama/documentaries, works in the human service profession, or just has a tender heart for children. =) It will definitely make an impact on your life in some way. It is thought-provoking, enthralling, and will definitely leave you "glued to your seat" at times.
Having seen the movie twice on TV now, I feel that it is one of most touching dramas that I've seen in a long time. It is very emotional, and will leave you angry at times. It focuses on a very controversial issue: inter-racial adoption. Although there is a tiny bit of bias on the adoptive parents side, for the most part is explores every perspective: the child's feelings, the birth mothers desires, and the adoptive parents love for the child.
I don't want to give away too much detail, so I'll give a brief summary: A young African American mother (played by Halle Berry), who has a drug abuse problem, abandons her baby boy at birth. The baby, named Isaiah, is giving to a very financially secure white couple with one teenage child. The couple shows unconditional love for their son, and are very nurturing and protective of him. When Isaiah is about 4 or 5, is mother who is now clean and free from any drugs or alcohol, wants to be part of his life. The boy is confused and doesn't want to leave his adoptive parents. I'll let you watch the rest. =)
One of the most memorable parts of the movie is when Isaiah is blowing bubbles with his adoptive big sister. She takes his hand and asks, "What different from our hands?" He remarks, "My hand is smaller."
