Boat Trip (2003, DVD)

Oh my gawd! I just returned from the theater and I'm still laughing! Here's the deal.. I rarely go to the theater to see movies, usually waiting until they get released on DVD where I can watch them in the comfort of my own home. Well, things are chaotic in my life right now and we both needed a diversion, so off we went with the intention of seeing whatever happened to be playing next... that turned out to be Boat Trip, and I am sooo glad it did!

Boat Trip is about this guy, Jerry, and his friend Nick. Jerry got shot down when he proposed to his gal and has been pining away for 6 months. Nick is a wanna-be player who never seems to score. They decide to take a little cruise where the chicks won't be able to leave without jumping overboard and drowning! But there's a problem, as they pull into the travel agency, they get into a tiff with one of the agents over a parking space..and end up getting booked onto a gay cruise ship. Hilarity ensues.

Cuba Gooding Jr (What Dreams May Come, As Good As It Gets, Men of Honor) is a marvelous Jerry. On the ship he falls into the pool and is rescued by the female dance instructor...whom he falls promptly in love with...and has to pretend he's gay to get close to her. Gooding is just precious! He's so pathetic...looks like a lost puppy dog! That boyish grin is just too much, and Gooding has good range as an actor. He pulls off desperate, love sick, and just plain nice guy with no problem at all.

Horatio Sanz is the luckless friend, Nick. Nick is a bit of a homophobe, which leads to high comedy aboard this ship..and much understanding as well. A Saturday Night Live player, Sanz is well versed in comedy. He adds a great element to this movie. He's a confused lad, but basically very good natured..just a bit well..uninformed. He's about to get a very nice life lesson. Sanz goes through this transition very well.

Roselyn Sanchez (Rush Hour 2, Nightstalker) is the dance instructor on the cruise, and the target of Jerry's fascination. Sanchez is absolutely gorgeous! Man, I would kill for her wardrobe (and to fit into it!). Funny thing, she can act too! Amazing. From hard core man hater to flirtatious sex kitten, Sanchez is believable. I hope to catch all of her movies now.

Vivica A. Fox (Teaching Mrs. Tingle, Why Do Fools Fall In Love) is the snotty ex-girlfriend of Jerry..the gal who broke his heart. She plays a type-cast spoiled debutante with ease. I'm not a big fan, but she did well in this part.. from the snooty nose in the air to deciding she wants him back.

I won't go thru all the other players but I must mention two: Roger Moore as the rich older gay man hitting on Nick the entire cruise, and Maurice Godin as the flaming queen Hector. You just would never picture Moore in this role, which is why it works so well! Taking him out of the mucho macho role of James Bond and into the role of Lloyd was genius. And Godin! OH man! What a performance! Godin is one of the highlights of this film without a doubt. Just hysterical and so very very real as Hector, he reminded me so much of the best friend I ever had in life... to a T this performance was! Bravo!

This comedic masterpiece was written and directed by Mort Nathan. This was his first movie after several TV series such as Archi Bunker's Place, Benson, and The Golden Girls. He's used to quirky characters and he portrayed them well here. He landed a top notch cast here and I think they all had massive fun with it. I hope he does more movies. Just flat excellent.

Now ladies, for you, I give you Cuba Gooding Jr's most gorgeous nekkid ass! Now, that alone is worth the price of admission. Trust me. And the scene will have you holding your sides from laughing SO hard.

Guys, you will enjoy this one too. Those skimpy little outfits that Sanchez wears are very hubba-hubba! You are bound to fall in love instantly.

Homophobes.. you stay away from this one, you will be too busy being self righteous to pay attention and learn that gays are real people. Pity, that.

Gays.. I think you will adore this film! This is just great outrageous fun..and lots of very nice, firm nekkid rear-ends in those tight pants with the butt cut out... you know the ones.. grin. I think this was a very good portrayal of two different gay factions.

Run time is 93 minutes of non-stop side-splitting laughs, and is Rated R for strong sexual content, language and some drug material. Very little drug material really, some pot references but not the center of the movie in any way, there is strong sexual content, but nothing close to even soft porn..and usually played for laughs. I say 16 and up.


I very highly do recommend this movie. The whole theater was in convulsive laughter throughout most of this. I was no exception. I plan to buy this one as soon as it is released on DVD. A real keeper!
