Pros:
Great story, wicked animation, one of the best animes out there.
Cons:
Ending could've been a wee bit better(That's just what I think)
It's official, any Anime with the word Macross in the name will most likely be based on music...
O.k. you know about Macross 7 right? Well you won't necessarily be seeing giant sub-woofers on the shoulders of the mechs, but you can bet that this'll be another music/meccha anime. If you don't already know, the Macross series are meccha/sci-fi genres. This one is a change from the typical meccha, now don't get me wrong, the characters still deal with issues, but it's not one civilization against another, it's more of a drama...
Let's start off with a fews details on the story...Wow, I mean this is my favorite anime cause of the story. Eden is basically a planet populated by humans, with the exception of some alien animals and vegetation, it's mainly where everything happens. The Eden Air-force is testing some new meccha/jets(to see which one to use) using Lieutenant Guld and Isamu Dison as the pilots. They both used to be good friends when they were young, but that ended later on. Another main character in this is also friend of Isamu and Guld, Myung, an ex-singer who is now the manager of the biggest singer on Eden and Earth, Sharon Apple. She goes to see Isamu after hearing about a piloting accident he had gotten into while testing the meccha/jet and they later find Guld. Isamu and Guld both have issues regarding Myung and love which usually results in fights. That's just part of the plot, dealing with love, but to make things worst, instead of using humans to pilot the macross fighter jets, the Air-force wants to use a new "Ghost pilot", so i'm guessing Isamu and Guld are pretty mad. The cool thing about this story is that all of the issues in the movie tie together (The Ghost pilot, Myung Isamu and Guld, and Sharon).
The animation in this anime is AWESOME! It's how they manage to mix traditional anime drawing with a bit of 3D computer animation nad not make it look out of place. Also the way they portray the action is beautiful, you have mechs that are also jets, so when they fight, half way into it they'll transform into jets and chase each other. Like the Slayers movie, they to have twisted camera angles, especially when they fly around and shoot out a **** load of missles at their targets. Even the concerts with Sharon are breath taking, they have Sharon with different hair styles, colors (and they weren't shy with the colors), clothes and have her come out to the audience, all in the same concert. The background scenes were painted in full detail, especially when they were showing Earth, and i'm pretty sure that some of the background elements move around.^_^
Now, I read another review on this anime and for music they put "it was okay, nothing memorable..." HELLO! This movies featured like 3 concerts full of "memorable" music, and one of which was 8 minutes long! As you can see I loved the music in this anime, so sure some of the lyrics were meaningless, but thats a minor flaw, the music is still good. You can imagine the sound of guns and missiles streaming through your ears as two fighter pilots try to kill each other or even watching a giant bird soar in the sky~_-, well thats what the effects actually sounded like, and the good thing is that it didn't interfere with the dialogue like some movies, but at the same time they weren't too quiet either. It also makes you feel like your in the city or in the wilderness and that is something that some animes need to work on. The voice acting was very decent, they fit the way the characters would act if they were real, I think manga did a really good job providing the sound for Macross, but then again if they didn't, it wouldn't really make any sense to base it on music.~_^
Well I guess it's time for my "Final Word", no doubt about it Macross Plus a great anime to watch-but i wouldn't recommend it to impatient watchers or fisrt-time anime watchers unless your really into complex stories(were all different). I mean, it wasn't always my favorite anime, I had to watch it a couple times before actually understanding it, but it's a good anime for teens and older and i also recommend getting the soundtrack to, it'll be well worth it.^_^
Extra Notes:
PG-13, Lots of violence, not too violent. There are swears in the movie, sexual dialogue in the movie also.
