Could this movie be any more perfect? I don't think so...directed by Ang Lee and written by Du Lu Wang. The screenplay was written by Hui-Ling Wang, James Shamus and Kuo Jung Tsai.
This is a lovely fantasy love story combining a beautiful tale of tragic love with the mythical story of a legendary warrior.
It begins when Li Mu Bai decides to return his treasured sword (The Green Destiny) to his dearest old friend. Almost immediately, trouble begins. It is stolen, and with the aid of his true love, Shu Lien (a warrior in her own right), they go on a quest to retrieve it.
There are several sub-plots interwoven in the story, making this movie complex and fascinating. Everything about this film was amazing. The acting was perfection, the tale was poignant, classic and magical, there was lots of action and the fighting scenes were amazing, the cinematography was other-worldly and the music set the perfect mood throughout the film. The fantasy side to this film is a lot of fun. The warriors fly and float through the air, doing amazing stunts, and leave you stunned in your seat! You just know that this is the stuff of ancient legends! These warriors are gods in the making!
Yun-Fat Chow played Li Mu Bai and Michelle Yo was Shu Lien. Chen Chang played Lo and Ziyi Zhang played Jen.
"Crouching Tiger" was sub-titled into English which I liked because you didn't get that hokey bad lip-sync thing going. In retrospect, I almost forgot that this was a sub-titled movie because it was done so well. Crouching tiger hidden dragon is a quote from Chinese mythology. It's meaning is that you should hide your strength from your enemies. Very sound advice. Also, the two characters in love, Lo and Jen,their names are significant as well. Lo's name is "Little Tiger" and Jen's name is "Little Dragon".
This is a great martial arts film, but much, much more. Even if you aren't a martial arts film buff, you will love this movie for the love story and the fantasy quality and beauty. I recommend this one highly.
