Bottom line: Riveting movie for those who crave action packed films and plot twists.
The Total# of Times I have watched this movie is now up to 3 and I am still cringing.
Libby(Ashly Judd) & Nick Parsons(Bruce Greenwood) take a Romantic getaway aboard a small boat and after a short but steamy sex scene Libby awakes to find her husband is missing, the boat splattered with blood & a bloody knife on the upper deck of the boat, the scene makes a powerful suggestion that Nick most likely dead and Libby most likely the one who killed him. As luck would have it she is standing on the upper deck holding the knife when the Coast Guard arrives (How convenient).
The search for Nick and or his body turns up nothing but
in spite of that fact Libby is arrested and convicted of his Murder. At first, although still in shock Libby takes the conviction pretty well and makes arrangements for her Best Friend Angela Green(Annabeth Gish ) to care for her son Matty, but after a few weeks things take a rather Ugly turn when Angela disappears with Matty.
Libby uses her cunning on the advice of her new Prison chums and is able to track Angela down via a phone call to employer and gets the shock of her life when she hears Matty
say "Daddy!". Starting to put 2 & 2 together one of her ex-attorney chums advises her about the Double Jeopardy Law and to serve her time. (This means she cannot be convicted of the same crime twice)Think About it
We really are given no indication of the Term of her sentence but she is paroled after only serving 6 years into a Last Chance Program overseen by Travis Layman(Tommy Lee Jones). Right from the start they butt heads and Travis seems to know Libby will be trouble for him. As she starts off looking for Angela & her son driven by her rage and longing to find her son, she heads to the Day Care where Angela worked just before she disappeared and when she got no help from the owner she takes matters into her own hands and breaks into the center to get Angela's forwarding address from their files.
Of course Libby is caught in the act and picked up by the police which means Travis has to take her back to jail Faced with the prospect of returning to Prison and not finding her son she makes a daring escape and and continues her search only to discover Angela had been killed in a freak accident a few years earlier when a gas leak caused the house to explode, she was the only one at home at the time of the explosion.
A newspaper clipping provides Libby her next clue as to the whereabouts of Nick and her son, with Travis hot on her tail she tracks Nick down and arranges to meet him at a cemetery so he can turn over the only thing she truly wants, her son, but once again he sets her up and she narrowly escapes with her life.
Meanwhile during his search for Libby Travis's investigation begins to take another direction after he initiates contact with Nick now posing as Johnathan Deverou and catches him in a lie, a few checks turn up some interesting facts and by the time Travis catches up to Libby he is ready to jump on her bandwagon.
The conclusion is a little predictable from here but the movie is still very much an enjoyable one, kind of makes you wonder about the irony of life.
