One of my favorites - it may be a sappy love story but the chemistry between Hanks and Ryan is amazing. I have seen the movie a million times and still cry at the ending!

If I could give this movie a higher rating, I would. This is my favorite movie ever. I love the story line. I don't want to get too much into it in case you are reading to see if you want to see it. But it's so neat how they don't know each other, but they actually do. You've got to see it. Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan give awesome performances!!!

I've seen this movie dozens of times, and each time I enjoy it. Meg Ryan is delightful and has great chemistry with Tom Hanks. It is a very cute love story about two people who are enemies but don't even know it, thanks to the internet. Any fan of romantic comedies will enjoy this film!

You've Got Mail Tom Hanks Meg Ryan SWEET Story

I love, love this movie. My husband has hundreds of movies & DVD's, but I think this is the only one I ever actually bought for myself. The movie is based on the storyline of classic 1940 movie Shop Around the Corner. Shop around the Corner starred Margaret Sullivan & Jimmy Stewart. The "computer" age couple are Meg Ryan & Tom Hanks. They have an online chatting relationship and end up falling in love over the internet. The trouble is in the "real world" they are actually enemies. Meg Ryan plays Kathleen Kelly owner of a small children's book store. She has inherited the store from her beloved mother. She believes in personal customer service, knows her shoppers by name, has children's story hours etc. Jean Stapleton plays a good part as one of Kelly's employees. Tom Hanks plays Joe Fox, owner of the big chain bookstore. He is opening a giant store right around the corner from Kelly's quaint little shop and has no concern for her business. Sadly the big guy eventually puts her out of business. People seem to be more concerned with a better price than good customer relations. Of course in the end they meet & fall in love, how else would a love story end! Men might not like this movie too much but you gals will. I watch it if I feel a little down & it lifts my spirits. Meg & Tom make a cute couple! Hope you enjoy it too!

Based on the classic film The Shop Around the Corner, this tale of pen-pal romance has been updated for the internet age. Hanks plays a book mega-store owner who falls in love over e-mail with the owner of a struggling children's bookstore, played by Ryan.

Ok, its not Gone with the wind. It also does not bring anything new to the comic-romance genre. But it is still Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks. There are couples that have that magic and some that doesnt. Meg and Tom have that spark that makes you want to watch their next movie. Other than that its pretty much an average movie.

Tom Hanks is my favorite actor, so I watch anything he's in. This is one of those movies that I could, and have, watch over and over and over. I loved the music in it so much that I bought the soundtrack and Nilsson's Greatest Hits just so I could have "Remember." I cry every time I watch it, and I love the scene where Meg Ryan says, "I wanted it to be you...I wanted it to be you so badly." Excuse me, I've got to go get a Kleenex!

I'm starting a dvd library and this was my first purchase. The movie is my favorite. I love Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan, and the fact that the movie takes place in NYC in a privately-owned bookstore makes it even more appealing.

  Well Done

I see this movie a few years ago, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I enjoyed it so much, I got on Ebay and found "The Shop Around the Corner", the Jimmy Stewart movie that this movie is based on. Both are excellent, but You've Got Mail is much easier to relate to because of the modern setting. This is something that is worth buying because you will want to watch it again.

A good movie has more than a love story, it has to be woven together in such a way that it draws you into the story and the characters. This movie succeeds.

  One of My Very Favorites

Could watch it over and over again...and I have and will again. It's a feel-good cleverly funny movie. Love, Love, Love it ...and I can't watch Sleepless in Seatle and Harry Met Sally over and over but I understand the similarity from the only partially negative review I found on here. Maybe it is a chick-flick...but its one of the best!

  Painful and derivative
Review created: 09/26/05
2 of 6 people found this review helpful.

You've Got Mail is a derivative, uninspired waste of 90 minutes. There is absolutely nothing creative out of this movie, besides trying to shamelessly cash in on the success of it's predecessors, When Harry Met Sally and Sleepless in Seattle.

Tom Hanks mailed this performance in (which he hardly ever does), Meg Ryan is unlikable, Greg Kinnear's character is preposterous, and the premise is absolutely ridiculous. Save yourself the time on this one and rewatch Harry or Sleepless.
