Pros:
Believable characters--three dimensional
Cons:
Dark images at times made it difficult to tell what was going on.
I am not a sci-fi fan per se, but anything starring Dustin Hoffman captures my attention. And so for this reason I viewed this movie from start to finish. Hoffman adds something to the story, a certain dimension.
The plot is pretty much formulaic, and predictable.
Without going into much detail we have earthlings, who actually never leave the earth but are at the bottom of the ocean, encountering an alien. Why do aliens always have to be the bad guy? Unlike Close Encounters of the Third Kind which I actually enjoyed from start to finish, and left me with a upbeat feeling.
The plot in Sphere pretty much moved forward, and all in all I didn't find particularly boring, although there were parts that strained for my concentration. At times the dark images had me squinting to make out what was going on. But there was an actual story line here, good guys win over bad guys, more or less. Not original, but hey how many movies sometimes fail to deliver this dramatic structure, lacking an actual beginning, middle, and ending? Although this story was a bit far fetch, but then you would expect that in a sci-fi.
Hoffman's dialogue lends it a bit more realism as he psychoanalyses the being "Jerry" inside the Sphere, or behind the computer, or whatever, and added a little more credibility to the plot.
Sharon Stone, as well as the other actors, Samuel Jackson, Peter Coyote, and Liev Schreiber all played good roles.
I watched this film on TV, and thought maybe it played better on the big screen. But on the whole it was an entertaining flick.
