Pros:
Fun...Very Imaginative...Must of Took Forever..Matches with the Lost Highway
Cons:
No Plot...Scary...Poltically incorrect
Before MTV...We had Disney to thank for the concept of "music video" when they released "Fantasia". Although the movie is a little "politically incorrect", it still manages to spread its magic and imagination along with timeless scores made by composers Bach, Schubert, Stravinsky and many others.
Plot
Fantasia does have a lack of plot, but it manages to put images to many compositions we are familiar with. From the creation of the world, to the Demon that lives on top of some mountain. The most timeless piece is the sorcerer s apprentice, which will always hold the image of Mickey and the brooms.
Why I liked the Film
Disney truly knows how to perform a piece. Although there is no dialogue, plot, and other elements of a typical movie...Disney sparks pure imagination in any classical music buff. Fantasy and Imagination is turned visual. I would say that Disney is perhaps the first people ever to release something close to a music video.
Why This Film might not be Good for Children
I agree, the film is not politically correct. It does have a few scenes that could scare or really make children get curious about the subject matter. I think it was probably a bad choice to pick "Bach's Fugue in D minor" to start off the movie...that score can scar any child's life.
The dinosaur's might also scare the child due to the T-rex mutilating the Stegosaurus. Another instance is The Night on Bald Mountain...all those demons and ghost will scare the heck out of any child.
What I did when I was Bored
You might think I'm just plain nuts, but I decided to play some of my roommate's CDs with Fantasia (Mainly the Nutcracker Suite). I decided to play the "Lost Highway" with the Nutcracker suite and came across coincidences that are just too eerie. Such as Bowie's song "Deranged" and how it conveniently ends when the fairies disappear. I did skip some tracks that didn't really fit the images on the television...and to make it even more eerie, the last scene ended with the song. (Yah, I was that bored). The Rest of the CD pretty much fits the mood of the movie...you just have to know when to switch and skip tracks.
Classic or Forgettable?
Disney did admit that they had to cut out some scenes in Fantasia to fit the budget. Its pretty much the shame that the movie had to end so quickly...(even though I did fall asleep during Ave Maria). I declare the Fantasia be considered an all time CLASSIC!!
