Pros:
good track selection highlighting at least one song from every album
Cons:
there is always room for other songs worthy of greatest hits status
For those of you just starting to explore the progressive rock genre, or simply have a mild interest in Rush, then "Chronicles" is the right best of compilation for you.
I guess I would consider myself to be more than just a mild Rush fan, but this double disc best of album highlights their best work, so I don't need to run out and get all their other albums--yet. Released in 1990, "Chronicles" contains all of their early material through "Presto." However, the power trio released three studio albums to date after this release.
Rush started out with a heavy sound, reminiscent of other power trio's at the time: Cream and Grand Funk Railroad. As time passed, the band created a more art-rock sound with intelligent lyrics and longer songs. When the 1980's rolled around, their art-rock sound continued, but it was less guitar heavy, and more synthesizer heavy.
With that said, "Chronicles" covers all the bases here. Classic hard rock cuts like "Working Man" and "Anthem" show the heavier side of the band during its early years. Other tracks on the first disc include radio hits "Fly By Night," "Closer To The Heart," "Freewill," and "The Spirit of Radio," as well as their art rock tracks "2112," and "Farewell To Kings."
Their second disc includes their 1980's hits like the fantastic "Tom Sawyer" and "Subdivisions." In my opinion, this is the better disc, largely because the synth-heavy sound was unique and highly creative, making the songs sound fresh and innovative. Other favorites include "Distant Early Warning," "Red Sector A," and one of my favorite Rush tracks, "Show Don't Tell."
Rush has been a band that has stood the test of time. By being able to create a new, creative sound, the band has been able to continue putting out music that doesn't seem stale or overdone. "Chronicles" highlights the great work of this band. Definately a 4 or 4.5....(Hey there is always room for more songs worthy of being on a best of album)
