Power Windows [Remaster] - Rush (CD 1997)

 Where RUSH really lost me.

Pros:
Manhattan Project and maybe one minute of the song Territories.

Cons:
Big Money, Mystic Rhythms, too cold and mechanical.

I am a HUGE Rush fan, but I really dislike this album!

There are a number of reasons why I dislike this album.

For one,and this is probably my biggest gripe, I feel that Rush got too far away from their hard rock/prog metal roots on this. They sound way too much like an 80s new wave/pop band on Power Windows, with all their new fangled synthesizers and keyboards. Geddy's bass playing is different, Lifeson employs too much effects with his guitar. In place of the thick tone from the 70's is a thin and weedy sound, even on the power chords. I realize that people change and their musical likes and dislikes and musical influences change as well, but this was too much of a change for me...and most definitely for the worst.

Secondly, I'm turned off by the entire album package..from the cover, to the color of the album ...and even the photos of the band, with their 80's mullets and their polished hair and bright, shiny clothing. WHO ARE THESE GUYS?

Thirdly and probably fourthly, I'm put off by the songs themselves and the sound of the album. Rush sound far too polished on this..there is a very cold and mechanical feel to the album..and Geddy's vocal lines are his least melodic and memorable ever. I have had this album for 17 years and I STILL can't remember how a few of the songs sound.. I even have to struggle to remember some song titles, which is very rare for me for a Rush album!

All this narsty stuff said, there are SOME things I like about it..but not too much.

Manhattan Project is an okay song and is the one tune I find myself enjoying the most when I attempt to relisten to it..and I HAVE listened to this album a bit, but only because I really love this band! I like some of Geddy's singing in Marathon and I like the heavy part in Territories, when the band attempt to rock out. I rarely make it past this song, however and I do remember hating what I can recall of Mystic Rhythms, which has some annoying electronic drumming in it.

I just don't like this album!
