I grew up in the 70's and remember the chart topping years of Elton John. The songs on this Greatest Hits albums bring back those wonderful, carefree years of the 70's.
The one thing that seems to be a constant on this album is that Elton John and long time friend and writer, Bernie Taupin wrote each and every one.
The first song on this CD is Your Song. This song has wonderful lyrics and a great melody. It is a slower song telling you that this is his gift to you. Your Song brings back my memories of my carefree teenage years. As always Elton's piano playing and Taupin's lyrics are a hit. This song was recorded and released in 1970.
The second song on this CD is Daniel. I don't think I will ever forget the first line to this song, "Daniel is traveling tonight on a plane". It just makes you think of someone that is leaving you that you care about. Released in June of 1972 this was yet another hit for Bernie Taupin and Elton John.
The third song Honky Cat, is an upbeat, fast song with some of the best piano playing ever done by Elton. Released in 1972, this is an uplifting and fun song to listen to.
The fourth song is Goodbye Yellow Brick Road one of those unforgettable Elton John songs. This is a wonderful listening song for those quite times when you just want to think.
The fifth song Saturday Nigh's Alright For Fighting, is another upbeat and a real rock and roll song for Elton. It is a great listen and once you hear it you will remember hearing it on the radio in the 70's. It was recorded in 1973. This is not one of the songs that I remember the most from Elton but definitely shows his talent.
The sixth song Rocket Man is one of those songs that everyone will remember when they start listening to it. Some people will remember it as "I think It's gonna be a long, long time". Recorded in 1972, this was a hit again for Elton.
The seventh song Bennie and The Jets, well what can you say about this song. I don't believe that there is a person anywhere who won't remember this great hit from Elton. Once again the great piano and vocals are great on this song.
The eighth song Candle In The Wind, was originally written for Marilyn Monroe. I think most people will think of Princess Diana when this song is played, after the wonderful performance Elton made at her funeral singing this song. It has some of the most beautiful lyrics ever heard. Originally released in 1973 and re-released in 1997 as a single for the Princess Diana Memorial Fund. "You're Candle Burned Out Long Before Your Memory Ever Will." That says it all about this great song.
The ninth song Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me was recorded in 1974 and became another big hit for Elton. A slow song, but has a message to get across to all who listen. This song to me is a cry for help, from someone is who is about to lose everything.
The tenth song Border Song is probably the song that I least remember hearing. It is definitely an Elton John song with great piano playing. It is a slow song and great for listening to when you want to just sit and listen to some great piano playing.
The eleventh song Crocodile Rock has to be by far the most popular song ever recorded by Elton. Every time I hear this song I can see Elton is one of his outrageous outfits singing this in concert. If you need a lift for your day this is the song for you. It is one of those songs that reminds me of the great days of Rock-n-Roll. Recorded and released in 1972 it was and still is one of the greatest Elton John songs.
With Elton John and Bernie Taupin writing every song on this CD, you know they are all hits. These two men made more hits together than this Greatest Hits CD could possibly hold.
Elton John Greatest Hits will bring back those fond memories and you will want to listen to it again and again. Even if you didn't know that Elton John sang these songs you will remember the songs themselves. This is a favorite of mine when I need to remember the good ole days of my teenage years. Go get one and see if each and every song is not one you have heard. It will be money well spent
