Pros:
a good disney movie telling the life of the dog
Cons:
Not many extras on the first disc, do we really need more Disney personality tests.
I got Lady in the Tramp a couple of months ago when I saw it at wal-mart and decided to pick it up, I remember watching it a few times as a kid and decided might as well pick it up while it s on limited release. The movie is an Walt Disney movie from back in the 1950 s and like all good Disney movies despite its age it s still very entertaining.
Story.
The story follows a cocker spaniel named Lady has her misadventures through family life of having a human baby born to her humans, and of course falling in love with the tramp. The movie begins with her as a puppy and her easily wrapping herself around her owner s hands. But at 6 months after she receives her license and a collar her humans start to act a bit different, paying less attention to her, knitting and singing. Her two friends a terrier named Jock and a blood hound named Trusty tell her that her humans are having a baby. But there conversation is heard by the vagabond dog Tramp who tells her the troubles baby can cause on the life of the dog, Jock asks him to leave after not believing his story about what happen in his life.
Later when Lady s owners leave on a trip the baby and Lady are put in the hands of Aunt Sara and her two conniving Siamese cats. Aunt Sara shoes Lady out of the baby s room and her Siamese cats set her up to take the fall for there mischief. This gets Lady muzzled but she runs away from the pet store where she s muzzled and runs into Tramp who helps her get out of it. From there it s a love story between the two as Lady learns Tramps life style and is even asked to run away with him.
Now the best part of the movie is that it is shot from a dogs angels most of the time so we see life from the life of a medium small dog and things like car wheels and people appear to be huge. Very rarely do we see a humans face, only Tony had the pizza shop who sings the movies main theme song Bella Noite is every really shown well. The rest of them we usually only see up to there waist. In fact we never really get a good shot of Lady s owner.
The animation is also beautiful as well Walt put the setting to look like his old rural town in which he grew up and he put a Victorian spin on it. The town is quite a beautiful old looking town at that. Then there are the dogs themselves and they are also well drawn and move like dogs most of the time, in less for a important scene of either emotion or humor calls for some more elastic animation.
As for the characters there is definitely a colorful bunch. Lady is an uptown dog and is confused about a lot of stuff in Tramps life. Tramp is more cynical and realistic about life and humans, he gets in trouble with Jock when he tells him about troubles babies can call. Then there are of course Jock and Trusty, Jock who has an Scottish accent and is a bit of a snob, looking down on Tramp being a mutt. And then there is Trusty who s a kind hearted southerner who s a little bit slow talking and he s lost his sense of smell.
Other different characters also appear on the pound area as we encounter an English bulldog, a Russian speaking dog, and of course the Mexican Chihuahua. And for those of you who get offended by political incorrectness there are the Siamese cats which only take up a couple of minutes in the movie but pretty much fulfill every Chinese stereotype in the book.
The DVD.
On the first disc you have the wide screen cinescope version of the movie as well has the standard screen version of the movie. On the 2nd disc you have the making of featuretts which as some pretty interesting stuff from Walt s home town to the cover up of who originally thought up the story of Lady and the Tramp. We also get a storyboard of the original story thought up in the early 1940 s but canned by Walt because he thought it sucked, and after watching the storyboard presentation I have to agree with Walt.
We also have the usual music videos and personality test games that go on two disc Disney DVD s. As well has a virtual puppy game which I haven t played and don t really plan on installing on my PC.
Final Recommendation.
We have a good movie about dogs, a good love story and a farily good 2 disc DVD set, I do recommend it.
