When I Fall in Love - Botti, Chris (CD 2004)

Chris Botti's When I Fall In Love: So will you with this cd

Pros:
Great background music, or for when you're planning a romantic evening.

Cons:
As with all Botti releases, there's not much to the liner notes.

Do you want lush, romantic music to make your partner's heart skip a beat? Do you want music that doesn't rely on pounding rhythms, bad language or suggestive lyrics to get the point across that you're madly in love? Are you nursing a bruised heart, and you need to get some of that emotion out?

Try Chris Botti.

This is jazz and pop that mellows and soothes the savage beast. Botti has provided backup to Sting, among others, and has forged a very successful career on his own. He takes standard romantic ballads, and then recombines them into a new sound.

When I Fall In Love
This is, without a doubt, one of my favorite renditions of this song. It gives just the right blend of hope, optimism, and a bit of heartbreak to make it free of any taint of being overworked into a sappy mess. In fact, you can pretty much say that the rest of the cd falls into this mold.

What'll I Do?
After a long intrustmental intro, the vocals of Paula Cole are added to give it a sultry twist. Trumpet and vocalist work together in this one, making it all shamelessly romantic and full of longing.

No Ordinary Love
Botti takes Sade's song, and gives it a new spin. It's nearly pop in style, but has a jazzy smoothness to make it work. The trumpet work replaces the original vocals, and Botti gets to show just how good he is.

My Romance
This is a slow, almost too slow, ballad. It's nice, but it really didn't do too much for me.

Let's Fall In Love
This one is almost too bouncy for this collection about heartache, but then, there needed to be some lightening up.

Cinema Paradiso
With the lush orchestration behind it, this is very close to what you would hear in a soundtrack. Still, it's quite lovely and very stylish, enough to make a tear come to your eye.

Someone To Watch Over Me
Another one of my favorite ballads is given a star treatment, and plenty of life.

La Belle Dame Sans Regrets
Taken from Sting's Mercury Falling cd, it's full of bounce and verve, and as an additional surprise, Sting comes in to do the vocals.

Nearness of You
Again, another slow, romantic ballad.

How Love Should Be
Paula Cole again returns to give the vocals in this one, and it really works. Excellent balance between vocalist and Botti.

Make Someone Happy

One For My Baby

Time To Say Goodbye (Con Te Partiro)

All in all, this is one of the best cd's to come out this year. You probably won't notice it, but if you do, give it a try. For nights when you want some romance in your life, this works without sliding into to juvenile rhythms and sweetness.

My only real complaint is that the liner notes are just a bit too sparse for this one. Everything else is top notch, from the engineering, style and the musicians giving it their all. You can't ask for much more than that.
