Pros:
A few good hits
Cons:
A few crummy misses
I grew up on Duran Duran, but left them in the dust during their "lean" years. So I was both surprised and glad to see them make a grand return in 1993 with the release of their self-titled album as well as two #1 Hits in "Ordinary World" and "Come Undone". Of the 13 songs on the album, there are about 7 or 8 good/great songs, leaving a few that should have been rewritten or else used as B-side songs for the singles.
Too Much Information - Duran Duran kicks it off with a great guitar rockin' thumpin' song about the demise of their career via MTV. Top 10 Single.
Ordinary World - #1 Smash ballad. This version is a little longer and not quite as gut-wrenching as the single edit but still packs a wallop.
Love Voodoo - A fun, spiraling melody with a lot of drum mixing.
Drowning Man - A failed and uninteresting techno political statement. Blah!
Shotgun - Not quite an instrumental, not quite a full song. Strange lyrics.
Come Undone - Moody #1 hit hooks you from the beginning.
Breath After Breath - Upbeat latino style song with semi-Spanish lyrics. Okay if you like that sort of thing.
UMF - Basic horny Duran Duran trash song. Good beat though!
Femme Fatale - Somewhat off-balance remake of the song by the Velvet Underground but this will reel you in after a few spins.
None of the Above - Very barren song with mostly just a drum beat. Discloses the band's lack of faith in God, etc.
Shelter - A nice surprise that unfortunately wasn't released as a single.
To Whom It May Concern - Dull song written in "letter-form" about how Duran Duran's agent took advantage of them and their $$$.
Sin of the City - Overlong song with crowd/ambulance sound f/x at beginning. Not bad once it gets into the chorus (about 3 minutes into the 7 minute song).
This is one of the group's better releases in quite some time. If you can find it for a good price then I suggest you go ahead and purchase it.
