It s been a long time since any artist had the effect on society that Bob Dylan did in the early 1960s. Although he successfully reinvented himself later in the decade as a rocker, the 1962 version of Dylan was an acoustic, angry, and uniquely talented folk singer. His first album Bob Dylan consisted mainly of cover versions of traditional folk songs. His second album, The Freewheeling Bob Dylan contains only songs written by Dylan himself. And, what songs they are.
The classic Blowing in the Wind first appeared on this recording. Peter, Paul, and Mary recorded it the next year and took it to the top of the pop charts. There are other angry songs on this album, notably "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall," and "Masters of War."
The Freewheeling Bob Dylan also features the gentle, if wry, romantic ballads "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right," and "Girl from the North Country". It is a testament to Dylan s talent that the different themes on this album don t clash as much as they demonstrate the artist s stunning range.

Yes, Bob Dylan may be an acquired taste for some people. His voice isn t sweet or smooth but it s original and it fits his lyrics. If you need a sweet voice to go with your folk music, try Pete Seeger who did as great cover of "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall" at his monumental Carnegie Hall concert featured on the We Shall Overcome album.
