Pros:
Inside Out
Cons:
What's with those album covers?
Two words - "Inside Out" - as soon as this CD is in your player forward to track nine and turn amp immediately to volume 11. Surely this is what Phil Collins is all about - a savage drum beat that drives a simple yet rocking track. Yes, he does lovely love songs and soundtracks and a little bit of big band but on this album from 1985 you get 'the essence of Phil'. I bought this album the day it came out which was at a time that you went out and bought his albums without really thinking twice. They got a lot of airplay in the first place and then to top it off he was just so visible at this time. I think this came out just before his appearance at 'Live Aid' with the whole "two concerts on either side of the atlantic on the same day" stunt. The clever thing is that this album (like a couple of his other albums) has a little bit for everybody, some rock, some slow, some moody, little bit of politics and so on.
Sting does a terrific cameo on "Long long way to go" which is a very smooth and satisfying soft melody. The other classic on here is "One more night" which has been played almost to death on those nasty "soft rock" stations but is clearly still one of his best ballads.
Which leaves "Sussudio" as the other track needing some comment - I seem to recall that when it was first released some people cried foul because it has almost the same chord stuffed in there as Prince's "1999" - as usual Phil ended up defending himself in a number of interviews - he had to come to his defense 3 years later for supposedly exploiting the plight of the homeless with "Another day in Paradise" - why the music itsself wasn't more the focus I don't know. Nonetheless, "Sussudio" is a jazzy piece of rocking funk that is probably permanently etched into the brain of most people listening to the radio in 1985.....and what about that song "Take me home" another one of those instantly recognizable ditties that you will never forget - love it or hate it.
No wonder this album is by now "Platinum Certified" - it's got it all.
