Deer Hunter 1978
Plot / Story
Deer Hunter is about a group of very close friends who work in a steel mill in Pennsylvania during the Vietnam war. The story is set in the late sixties and these guys have decided to volunteer to join the Army and serve in Vietnam. Just a bunch of young, hard working, patriotic men. Quite a bit of time is spent getting to know this group of guys, and their families. Eventually three of the five good friends head off to war. After their tour in Vietnam nothing would ever be the same. The life that they enjoyed so much was over. Like every other war does to good men, it changes them, some physically and all men, mentally. Before they all left for Vietnam they enjoyed a yearly deer hunting trip. After their return the hunting trip was not any fun, in fact it was down right dangerous. This is a story of friendships, hardships, love, lust , war and Russian Roulette.
Conclusion
Deer Hunter won several Academy Awards in 1978; it won Best Picture, Best Director and Best Supporting Actor among others. I thought some of the acting in the film was superb. Christopher Walken aced his performance as Nick in the film and he won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor . Robert Deniro and Meryl Streep also gave excellent performances. I thought the pace of the film was a little slow, at times the film seemed to drag on. The directing was good enough to win an Academy Award for Best Director. Although the directing was good, I was not that impressed by it. Although 1978 was not a banner year for good movies, I liked some films more than the Deer Hunter. Some of the films that I liked from 1978 include; Midnight Express, Heaven Can Wait, National Lampoon's Animal House, and Every Which Way but Loose. Hey it s my list, I can like Every Which Way But Loose if I want to. Midnight Express and Heaven Can Wait were both very good films.
Over the years some critics and movies goers have said that this film is an anti-war film, while others say it s not. I think you could see the film any way you wanted to. The film shows us how good these men had it before they went off to fight a war. Then we see the hell that they go through and finally a tragic ending. This is what war has done to a group of friends and at the end they all sit and sing God Bless America. The whole thing is a trip that is, what it is. Hamburger Hill was about the 101st Airborne and the brutal battle that they fought in Vietnam. Some believe that it is among the best anti-war films around. The film shows nothing more than the brutal battle that occurred and what the men went through, mentally and physically.
I think the film would have been better without a one hour wedding party and more time spent on what happened to them in Vietnam. The first hour of the film is spent on a wedding party that seems to last forever. Michael Cimino could have developed the characters in fifteen minutes instead of an hour. Other than that, the film was pretty good, meaning above average. The character development was thorough. The acting was the best part of the film. Everyone involved done very well with their performances. The cinematography was outstanding. Some of the shots on the mountains during their hunting trips were awesome. The fifteen minutes of the film that shows their war experience was shot good as well. The dialog was different but it works nonetheless. I thought the story could have been better. There is a lot of unwarranted dialog The score was good. If not for the superb acting, I am not sure that I would even recommend the film. Anyone who enjoys Deniro or Walken may like this film. It is worth seeing one time. What this film does get across, is just what war can do to men and a community. Overall I give the film 3 of five stars.
