Pros:
excellent singing, songwriting, production
Cons:
a few wack songs--but only a few
I'm an avid hip hop and R&B fan, and while I have lots of cassettes for my walkman, this one has been in my walkman (on and off) for several years, almost constantly. Why? It's one of the best R&B/hip hop albums out there--and it always will be.
Mary's singing is exquisite; the writing on most of the songs is excellent; and Puff Daddy (just "Puffy" then, I guess) was doing what he does best--not rapping, but PRODUCING (Puffy, stick with that).
Everyone knows "Real Love" but my favorite song on the album is "You Remind Me." "Reminisce" is also excellent (a little spin on the Pete Rock/C.L. Smooth song), as is Mary's remake of "Sweet Thing" (originally done by, I believe, Chaka Khan/Rufus). And I normally despise remakes.
Get this album, whether you're a hard-core Mary fan or just your average R&B/hip hop nut. There are a few songs that thud for me, but even those may ring for you, because Mary's voice (always, but on this album particularly) rings with so much emotion, raw energy and style that you won't believe it was her first.
