Pros:
Anita unforgettable vocal styling
Cons:
Nome come to mind
The album cover of Rapture reveals all you need to know about Anita Baker and her music: soft, sweet, sultry, colorful, inspired, breath-taking in its size and delicate features. Beautiful to behold, and a treat to ears and mind to listen to, Anita Baker is the quintessential female R&B and Jazz crooner. She was the voice of romance in the mid eighties to mid nineties, when she dropped off the musical map to start a family. But once heard, her voice can never be forgotten, so unique in it richness of depth, and soothing in it s soulful caress.
Rapture released in 1986, is the sophomore album from Anita Baker that stormed onto the charts with Sweet Love , and Caught Up in The Rapture. But in my opinion every release save one, Watch Your Step, is an unqualified hit! From the opening track Sweet Love, the CD seems to float from track to track at the same pace; never too slow, never too fast. It s mellow candlelight, white wine, and grapes lets talk quietly music. Its lets make love slow and easy, exploring every inch of each others bodies music. Its I want to relax and let Anita s voice sooth away the cares of the day music.
I won t neglected,
I won t be denied,
The pleasure of your kisses,
The pleasure of your smile,
I think you take for grant
I ll always be here
Just because I love you
It doesn t mean I won t disappear
Been so long of missin you baby
Been so long of missin you baby
How many woman (an no doubt some men), can identify with the words and thoughts Anita sings so eloquently about in track 4 Been So Long. Strong woman yes, but also needful, stressing the anthem of her heart to her lover: Love me or I ll leave!
Anyone familiar with Jazz, or the Manhattan Transfer will recognize and appreciate the evocative beauty Anita brings to her retention Mystery. In this cut her voice takes on a smoky, soft tones that conjures images of a dimly lit lounge, smoke drifting in clouds around patrons memorized by the small caramel skinned diva on stage as she effortless draws a picture with her voice. And even after the song end her voice lingers as if held aloft by the smoke as it rises to the ceiling and slowly dissipates.
If you buy only one Anita Baker CD, Rapture should be the one!
