Pros:
Aerosmith's best work

Cons:
Only 8 tracks, I think they moved "Seasons of Wither"

Ahhhhh, Aerosmith. This is one of the very first rock bands I got into as a young punk, and for a while there I had the entire Aerosmith collection on 8-track. OK, stop laughing, it seemed like a good idea at the time!

Aerosmith was formed in the early 70's on the east coast. The band released it's first album ("Aerosmith") in 1973, and it was the albums hit single "Dream On" that generated a lot of interest in the band. "Aerosmith" was a good album, but the band had not really developed their trademark sound and songwriting abilities, and the album was not received well with the critics, another huge failure on the critics' part. Aerosmith's second album "Get your wings" was released in 1974, and proved to be the foundation of the classic Aerosmith sound. "get your wings" was also unique in that the band had not really hit it big yet, and their sound and recordings were still somewhat raw, as opposed to later efforts which tended to be just a little too polished. Aerosmith would hit their first zenith with 1975's "Toys in the Attic", and 1976's "Rocks".

In my opinion, and I do not mean to deride Aerosmith in any way, the old Aerosmith (Everything up to "Draw the Line") just rips the wings off of the new stuff, and I would advise anyone just getting into this band to start with "Get your wings", or "Toys in the Attic", and move forward from there.

In a true testament to the longevity and integrity of this band, the original lineup of Steven Tyler (Vocals), Joe Perry (Lead Guitar), Brad Whitford (Guitar), Joey Kramer (Drums), and Tom Hamilton (Bass) still persists today despite many problems including substance abuse, label problems, health problems, and a serious popularity decline in the early to mid-80's. Try and remember that this band has been around in it's current form for over 30 years!

OK, enough history, here's "Get Your Wings", track by track:

1. "Same old Song & Dance" - Aerosmith's "Hit" track off this album, "Same old..." is a great rock & roll song based on a really cool riff. Joe Perry does some great work here, and this song still gets radio play to this day. Classic.

2. "Lord of the Thighs" - Steve Tyler shows some of what is to come with his first "Womanizing" song. Although I fid the lyrics a bit comical, the song is very good. It starts out with a cool piano bit and segues into a really cool blues-basedmid-tempo rocker. Excellent.

3. "Spaced" - An often overlooked Aerosmith classic, I really like "Spaced". It starts out with some cool sound effects, then morphs into a somewhat unusual riff. There are some great moments in this song, and the lyrics are really cool.

4. "Woman of the world" - I remember that certain girls really liked this song back in the day. Needless to say, this one got a lot of play on that old 8-track boom box (lol). Mmmmmmm, 70's chicks (drool). I like this one too, although it's not one of my faves on this album. It's kind of a pep song for women. As usual, Joe Perry is really up to the job on this one.

5. "S.O.S. (Too Bad)" - My second favorite song on this album, this one is a blues based rocker with a catchy riff and even catchier lyrics. Very cool, and classic Aerosmith.

6. "Train kept a rollin" - An old blues classic, Aerosmith dusted this one off, and rearranged it into a showcase of their talents. Multiple lead guitar breaks and some really cool timing events make this one an Aerosmith classic and another high point on an album with multiple gems. Just great!

7. "Seasons of wither" - This is a excellent song, my favorite on this album. It starts out with a REALLY cool semi-acoustic guitar intro, and is just a well-crafted and played song. Outstanding lyrics and guitar work. Most excellent. Kudos to Joe for writing the acoustic parts, and for the excellent lead guitar work on this song. I swear this song used to come after "Spaced", though. Anybody else want to verify that? Aerocat?

8. "Pandora's Box" - This is another Aerosmith classic. Just that classic Aerosmith sound, and, as usual, stunning guitar pyrotechnics from Joe. An Aerosmith standard for many years.

Well, that about wraps it up. If you're into Aerosmith, or just curious, I highly recommend this album.

Rock on!
