Pros:
Every great Aerosmith song in their rawest in-concert incarnations.

Cons:
Well, just a couple tiny qualms with the performances.

INTRODUCTION
Hello, everybody. This is John Bishop typing, the DeadMilkboy of Epinions.com. Before I launch into the following review, I d like to mention that this is part of a series of reviews I m writing based on one of the greatest American rock n roll bands in history, AEROSMITH! I d like to thank Aerocat (another Arizona native, bless her soul) for giving me the chance to do something other than write reviews of classic B-movies and current CD/DVD releases, and besides AEROSMITH F*CKING ROCKS! Posted here is the URL to Aerocat s official Epinions.com Aerosmith Write-Off page, and a list of names of other hopeful Aero Force fellas and freaks joining me in the write-off. For reference purposes, I got the lyrics and and quotations/information from www.rockthisway.de and aerosmithlyrics.homestead.com.

LIVE! BOOTLEG
Every few years or so, we get an unconventional live album of some sorts. What I am talking about is the live album based upon the old peddling of bootlegs. Everyone wanted to get a taste of a live show without having to wait for a performance album to come out, and would often prefer the authenticity of a real live tape than to the polished sounds of a typical concert album. But before Pearl Jam released their own long line of 2000 bootleg performance CDs, or Bob Dylan and the Velvet Underground come out with their Bootleg Series collections, Aerosmith got in with the joke in 1978, when Columbia Records released LIVE! BOOTLEG, a 16-song double-LP set of Aerosmith performances recorded without overdubs or compromise.

The album s design is of course a play on all the unauthorized live recordings which circulated in the mid 1970s, when Aerosmith were a top concert draw and successful rock band. But in 1978, Aerosmith needed to take a vacation from the inner turmoil brewing between the band, thus comes the live album, which was meant to give the band a chance to fire back at the bootleggers with their own authorized album of raw live performances. But this is describing the album as a whole, so a track-by-track list will do more justice:

Back In The Saddle from ROCKS, live in Indianapolis 7-4-77
The original song was a fierce studio beast, but here it is stripped down to its elements, and the band does a good job bringing the fire. Joey Kramer still does a fierce job on the drums, and the electric melody still sounds beautiful. And onstage, Steven Tyler screams his throat out more than one occasion, yet never loses the ability to ride the song for all its length. Joe Perry s guitar sounds good at the end, but not too good. All in all, a faithful live rendition of one of my favorite Aero tracks. Happy birthday, mothaf*cka!

Sweet Emotion from TOYS IN THE ATTIC, live in Chicago 3-23-78
Joe Perry s fuzzed-out guitar dominates this live version, whether it s just punching out wild solos, employing the trippy voice box, or stretching one note for 10 seconds. Seriously, this performance kicks some major a**. As the liner notes point out There s nothing like a tortured Strat. And as good as Joe Perry is, he is amply supported by the great rhythm section of Kramer, Tom Hamilton, and Brad Whitford. Steven Tyler also has the voice to knock this one out of the ball park as well, even belting out alternate lyrics: Well standin' in the front just a shakin' your tail/Can you swing on my back, it'll pay your bail/What'cha tellin' me things I can sure understand/ Cause a month on the road and I'll be chewin' on your gland.

Lord Of The Thighs from GET YOUR WINGS, live in Chicago 3-23-78
This version easily smokes the version on the original album in shape and form. The band knows a groove when they play one, and by the end of the song, it stretches on non-stop and all sounding excellent. Every aspect of this performance is dead-on, from Tyler s scats to Perry s string-bending and Tom Hamilton s fat bass line, etc. Damn, what an excellent piece of work!

Toys In The Attic from TOYS IN THE ATTIC, live in Boston 3-28-78
The title track from the 1975 classic is resurrected in a punishing fashion, with enough ferocity and raw power to easily make this every inch as vital as its studio counterpart. Listen to the band play, and you ll hear how good the band functions on drugs. Great closing track from a classic performance.

Last Child from ROCKS, live in Boston 8-9-78
Been dealin' all night/I'm living back home, Lord/Yeah... and it bites.
Thus begins this ballsy, raw version of their ROCKS smash was taken from a show at the Paradise Club. The groove is heavy, the lead guitar wily, and the vocals hot stuff. It doesn t beat the original track, but it stands beside it nonetheless.

Come Together, live in Waltham, Massachusetts 8-21-78
The Beatles gave Aerosmith a classic by means of the cover of this song, originally from the SGT. PEPPER S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK. Recorded at a secret gig at the Wherehouse, this features a nice piano lick and the same electric sensibility that was such a key part of the appeal of the studio version. Steven Tyler doesn t do that vocal tic that was in both the Beatles and their own studio versions, but the song doesn t need it when it sounds as blistering and hard as this.

Walk This Way from TOYS IN THE ATTIC, live in Detroit 4-2-78
A voice box which Joe Perry busts out for his guitar is hardly necessary on this smokin rendition of this funked-up classic, which is jump-up-and-down good even with that damn effect. Tyler just rolls along with the beat and delivers a flawless rap throughout.

Sick As A Dog from ROCKS, live in Indianapolis 7-4-77
This is a another great album track that pops up on this compilation. As a matter of fact, the album earns brownie points for dishing out every one of the most vital Aerosmith songs from 1973 to 1977, for its like a greatest hits album in and of itself. More great selections come later, but this version of the ROCKS centerpiece rules.

Dream On from AEROSMITH, live in Louisville 7-3-77
There is an electric urgency in this version that undercuts the majesty of the original version, and the song s melody often gets sour here and there. And Steven Tyler undercuts the closing line of the second verse with mothaf*cka. But this version still rocks harder than the original, even if its execution sucks compared to the version we all know and love.

Chip Away The Stone, live at Santa Monica Civic Auditorium 4-8-78
This was written by Richard Supa, and a studio version of this didn t surface until the 1987 compilation of album tracks called GEMS was released. It was also one of the first times the song was played onstage. This version riffs and rocks with intensity, and it s no surprise that the studio version would sound somewhat similar to this. But this version is the one to hear, and it s even got a piano, too, courtesy of Mark Radice.

Sight For Sore Eyes from DRAW THE LINE, live in Columbus 2-24-78
An album track from their 1977 album, this version is a shuffling in-concert dynamo, with Steven Tyler just going loco verbally in between verse lines.

Mama Kin from AEROSMITH, live in Indianapolis 7-4-77
Oh yeah, start sleepin late and suckin tea with this excellent live companion piece to the classic track from Aerosmith s debut album. Do I really have to tell you how much this version rocks? Hear it yourself!

S.O.S. from GET YOUR WINGS, live in Indianapolis 7-4-77
An obscure album track from 1974, this is belted out in flamboyant and raucous style. This and Mama Kin were a couple of our favorite early rockers, as stated in the liner notes.

I Ain t Got You, live in Boston 4-23-73
This is one song from the legendary Pall s Mall performance, which was released in order to beat the bootleggers. Originally resurrected by The Yardbirds, this down and dirty Clarence Carter cover shows the band in their early years, poised to take over the world or if not that, at least put on a great f*ckin show.

Mother Popcorn, live in Boston 4-23-73
A James Brown cover from the Pall s Mall show. A 25 year-old Steven Tyler channels his best R&B vocal, and a swinging rhythm section is bolstered by Joe Perry s hot licks and saxophone work by David Woodford. However, once this song ends, it doesn t skip to track 16, but gives you another song to check out, a sweet live version of Draw The Line.

Train Kept A Rollin from GET YOUR WINGS, live in Detroit 4-2-78
This is a straight hard rock version of the Yardbirds cover that was an essential album track in 1974. This is all about guitar fire (that coda really smokes) and Steven Tyler s howls. He gets the audience to rock along with him here, and proudly exits the stage with these words: Goodnight, you re f*ckin beautiful, goodnight!

Although Aerosmith would issue two polished live albums with their CLASSICS LIVE albums, LIVE! BOOTLEG captures Aerosmith at their most solid, untouched and crowd-pleasing during their early reign on hard rock. Shine up your saddle and dream yourself a dream come true, and check out this album. Make sure to keep it a secret though!
