Pros:
The original members are back together
Cons:
Still on drugs during the making of this album...not very creative...you can hear the straint on Steven's voice
This is by no means a bad album. However, it is totally uncharacteristic for Aerosmith. Packed with catchy, pop music, Done With Mirrors is fun to listen and dance along to, but lacks the normal Aerosmith rock touch and creativity.
This is the first album since the original band members reunited in the mid-eighties, but unfortunately, went virtually unnoticed by critics and fans alike. This was also the last album released by the band before they sobered up for good.
Let the Music Do the Talking is the perfect album opener. This song was originally done by Joe Perry when he split from the band, and created his own, The Joe Perry Project. Touched up lyrically and musically by Steven Tyler, this is probably the best song off of the record.
My Fist, Your Face isn t very threatening, due to the fast-paced catchiness of the song.
Shame On You s heavy beats make this song more menacing and sets a nice groove, but halfway through the song, I itch to switch to a new one.
The Reason A Dog is a relatively simple song musically. But I ve found the main lyric to be true: The reason a dog has so many friends is cause he wags his tail instead of his tongue.
Shela is nice musically, but the lyrics and vocals leave much to be desired.
Gypsy Boots is one of my favorites from this album. The beats are heavy, and the chorus is fast, and it s an all around fun song. Gypsy, gypsy, dancin thieves, gypsy, gypsy, bittersweet/screamer, dreamer, disarray/gypsy/gypsy, why don t you fly away?
She s on Fire has a cowboy twang that sets the mood for a campfire. (No pun intended.)
The Hop is a great dancing song that sounds more like a swing/jazz song. Can t stop rockin tonight says it all!
Keeping with tradition, closing the album is a ballad. At least, Darkness is the closest thing on this album to a ballad. Nonetheless it is my favorite track. It kinda reminds me of the Michael Jackson videos Thriller and Bad...I can just picture him walking down the dark alley, snapping his fingers, and moving his legs side by side to this song. Hehe. Does anyone else have any idea of what I m talking about?
All in all, this is a fun album to listen to in general. However, for casual Aerosmith fans, I would have to recommend Toys in the Attic, Pump, Rocks, and Get Your Wings over Done With Mirrors.
