Cold Mountain (2004, DVD)

I really like this movie, Especially the part Renee Zelwinger plays. I am a civil war buff and this movie shows the home side of things not just the combat parts.

I bought this movie, thinking it looked like a great movie. I do like to watch historical movies set in any time. I just did not like this one at all. I think part of the problem was Nicole Kidman. Renee Zellwegger did a great job in the movie. I did think it had a good story line, but just not what I expected, I borrowed the movie to a friend of mine and she really liked it, so I gave it to her. But as the rest of the reviewers said they all liked it, so don't take my opinion to highly, I just wanted to add my thoughts.

Ada Monroe (Nicole Kidman), Inman (Jude Law), and Ruby Tuewes (Renee Zellweger) are the principal characters of this epic story in the little mountain village of Cold Mountain, North Carolina during the Civil War. Ada has just moved to Cold Mountain from Charleston with her preacher father (Donald Sutherland). Inman is one of several workers on his new church. There is an almost immediate attraction between Ada and Inman. But then the war breaks out, and every grown man must enlist and go.

The story revolves about Inman's impossible attempt to return to his newfound love, Ada. He endures so many tragedies including:
(a)the battle of Pittsburg where he barely escapes and deserts the Confederate army.
(b)a preacher (Philip Seymour Hoffman)who was attempting to kill his black, pregnant mistress
(c)Southern bounty hunters who are pursuing deserters and lock him up with others in a chain gang.
(d) an old woman who has nothing to live on and finally kills her last goat right on the screen for us to see
(e) a young widow (Natalie Portman) with a baby who befriends him but then is raped by passing Yankee soldiers.

Meanwhile, Ada, who has never done anything that a lady would not do, is confronted with running a farm with practically no food and no help. Enter Ruby Tuewes, who has the ability to completely run a farm. The two are a team and together make it with lots of blood, sweat, and tears during the war years. But there are interruptions by scalawags that would like to marry Ada and then Ruby's father returns out of the blue--a deserter that gets them in trouble because they have protected him.

The movie ends on a bittersweet note but with hope for the future, as most war movies do. And Inman does make it back eventually.

Renee Zellweger is the real star of the movie. She played the tomboy Ruby to the hilt and won Best Supporting Actress of 2003. Once she enters the story, she takes over in a character that she has never played before. She is totally into this role, and I was very impressed by her performance.

Nicole Kidman and Jude Law were both nominated for the main acting awards but did not win. They were remarkable in their roles as well. The movie also was nominated for Best Cinematography and Best Scoring. Two songs from the movie were nominated--"Scarlet Tide" and "You Will Be My Ain True Love", but neither won.

An extra disk of special features is included with this DVD, and if you are interested in mountain music, it explains how it came to be and thrives today.

I enjoyed this movie very much: it reminded me what movies used to be - entertaining. All the actors were excellent. It was rather sad and ended on a sad note but I feel it portrayed difficult times and real life during the Civil War without sugar coating. It was most entertaining and carried me to another time - just for a while.

I bought the Dvd 2 weeks ago, enjoyed watching it. I heard quite a lot about this movie and was well worth buying it.

I really enjoy this movie. It’s perfect for male and female viewers. There is the love story, but there is also reference of the Civil War so there's something in it for everyone. Love this movie. It’s a great rainy day flick when you are going to be stuck inside all day.

I guess it was shocking to see what people of that time period went through, Both the north and the south, blacks and whites. We need to see that so that we can be more empathetic. This was done very well and I loved the acting that Rene Zelwiger, Jude Law and Nichol Kidman performed.

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. If anyone, like me, loves the Civil War era, would probably enjoy this movie. It ended on a bit of a sad note but goodness still prevailed.

Cold Mountain is set during the American Civil War and is essentially a love story of a soldier who spends the better part of the war trying to get back to the girl he left behind. Jude Law is a confederate soldier from North Carolina who falls for Nicole Kidman, a minister's daughter, right before leaving to fight the war. Law later deserts the army after the battle of Petersburg and works his way back home to Kidman, enduring many hardships and perils with only her in mind. The music, cinematography and acting makes this movie a very good one to see if you like a good old fashioned romance. The period soundtrack by artists such as Allison Krauss and Jack White adds much to this film. Recommended.

I recently bought the DVD of Cold Mountain. I basically bought the DVD because
it had a 2nd DVD about the making of Cold Mountain which I thoroughly enjoyed.
This set of DVD's was in perfect shape and played excently. I had no complaints
at all.

I had read the book and liked the movie. It was a good story and well acted. I would buy it again.

I think the movie is a classic. I'd seen it before and wanted to have it for my collection. It protrays what life must of been like during the civil war in a whole different aspect of other movies/books. Wish the ending would of been different though.

Cold Mountain is the best Movie EVER! It seems like every time I watch this movie, I see something I missed the first time. I will watch it over and over again.

Beautifully and poetically written script that is rare in capturing the ugliness that the Civil War was (at home and on the battlefield), rather than using a glossy Hollywood misrepresentation as a backdrop. A Deeply moving tale that does its author proud. The story is at once historical, graphic, hisotically correct, magical and mystical -- a condition well served by the incredible talent and stellar performances of Nicole Kidman, Jude Law and Rene Zellwegger. The remarkable supporting cast wraps, like cotton, around the core characters filling the screen and the heart with an incredible story of war,longing and the power and infinity of love.

I wanted to purchase it to watch it. I ask my daughter if she knew where you could buy it and she said she had looked everywhere and could not find it.She advised me she had my dvd and watched it once a month. She ask me to try and find her one. I told her if it could be found it would be on ebay. I found it there and just kept it for myself.

Hey....Always looking for a bargain. Watch lists allow me to rip off sellers by not being forced to bid. Watch lists are great tools for buyers. This way I get stuff cheap and I don't have to pay Ebay anything. The idiot seller has to pay. Love it!!! Ebay is geared for buyers. Keep sellers as the underdogs and I'll keep buying. Hope they never get wise. Would really hate to buy at a fair price. Some people think sellers are the key to Ebay success. Not so, it's people like me waving a nickel that make things happen. THIS MOVIE IS ANOTHER WOMAN MOVIE. THIS MOVIE IS A GOOD RENNE MOVIE. I LOVE THE WAY SHE ACTS. THIS MOVIE REALLY BRINGS HER OUT. THIS MOVIE IS A GOOD MOVIE TO WATCH WITH THE LIGHTS OFF AND A COFFEE. THIS MOVIE WILL MAKE YOU CRY.. THE MEN GO TO WAR AND THE WOMAN ARE WAITING... THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN... WELL YOU NEED TO WATCH THE MOVIE..

"Cold Mountain" is a grand old-style, satisfyingly catch-you-up-in-the-sweep-of-emotions/resistance-is-futile Hollywood epic, whose primary difference from "Gone With the Wind" is that the actresses get to flash some tasteful T & A and use a four-letter word more vulgar than "damn" about manure.

i like that is came with a widescreen and normal dvd. i bought it because it was cheaper than at a store but it good enough condition to give as a gift.

Magical, mystical, poetic, beautiful. Wonderful story, acting, score, and directing. A marvellous achievement.

I like this movie so much I bought the book and the audio book and the DVD and enjoy them again and again. Like Private Ryan it is not a happy story but somehow takes me to a place where life is meaningful and has a purpose and good wins out after all. Frasier's writing and the performances in the movie are outstanding. I hope he can continue with this level of quality.

I love the movie, it came to me in good condition, but it took a while to ship and they said when I bought the product that it was a "Boxset", but when I got it, it was a 2 disk dvd but not in a box, I brought it up to them and they said there isn't such a thing as a boxset for this dvd and they refunded 2.00 of my money wich was nice. They seemd nice and willing to help me with my needs.

2.What you like most about it: a period of time in our history that is still on unknown to many.
3.What you dislike about it: desertion from his comrades.

Nicole Kidman and Renee Zellwegger are awesome in this movie.
It definitely depicts the Hardships of the Civil War Era and the atrocities thereof.
