The Digital Rebel: Amazing & Competitively Priced DSLR!

The Digital Rebel was my first jump into the world of Single-Lens Reflex (SLR) digital photography. What a great move. The Canon Digital Rebel (300D) is a great starter digital SLR because it of its current market price. I purchased mine for $200 dollars because the auto-focus system does not work. But all I have to do is do a quick twist or two to put things into focus and there you have it- $1000 digital camera at a 1/4 of the cost. If you need auto-focus you can pick up a Rebel for $400 in perfect condition here on eBay. Think things through, do your research, but in the end, if you only have a few dollars to spend: go for the Rebel!

  Great Camera

The rating of this camera all depends on what you are comparing it to. Compared to any non DSLR Camera. The digital rebel 6.3 is awsome. It's color and focusing ability are great and best of all the moment you push the button it takes a picture, no delays. Now the new Rebels are definately better. They can take more pictures faster, the rapid fire on this camera is slow, and speed that is uploads pictures to the computer fairly slow, I think the new ones do that quicker also.
I total I bought mine for less than 1/2 the price of the newest Rebel. I think it will do me and my family for years to come. I highly recomend it for someone who wants a good quality DSLR camera at reasonable price.

I love the photos it takes. It is easy to use and an excellent camera. The only thing that keeps me from giving it an excellent is the fact that it doesn't have internal memory. The quality of the photos is worth every penny though. I was able to do my own portraits of my children and nobody can tell that it wasn't professional. I even have a friend that wants to schedule a "free" appointment!

I already had a canon rebel 35 mm camera and liked it alot a decided to purchase a Digital to avoid buying and developing film.
when i looked at the price of new Camera's I could see that the price was more that I wanted to pay so I looked at used camera after a few days I could tell about how much the camera's were going for and bid on several until I finally won one I looked over each camera carefully to be sure that it had all that i wanted and that it was taken care of

Pro's - great camera, easy menus, easy to use, can use basic or top end lenses, you buy the lens that suits your application and wallet.
Fantastic value for money, robust, beautiful and must be the best thing I ever bought on eBay!

Con: the speed / sport setting does not really work, whether an eagle flying or a football player running, the focus and shoot is not perfect and will disappoint you if this is what you're hoping to use the camera for.

Are you looking to get into a digital SLR, (with an interchangable lens mount) at point-and-shoot prices? Now that Canon has a 10MP Digital Rebel, the 6.3 model can be had CHEAP!

Like everything else in the Rebel series, the 6.3 is fast, smooth, and easy to use. At 6.3 MP the resolution is certainly good enough for 8x10's, and the color saturation is superb. The low-light capability is very good, and with the right lenses it can put your old upscale 35mm to shame.

All your existing Canon EF lenses qill work with the Digital Rebel. (I don't know about you but I have much more tied up in optics than I do in camera bodies.)

Battery life is fair, and is actually very good when using the camera like a conventional 35mm SLR, (where you frame all your shots through the optical viewfinder). If you choose to use the display then you can expect battery life to be shortened quite a bit, though even when using the display the Digital Rebel will still outlast my Olympus 3.2MP point-and-shoot by almost an hour.

I hate to admit it but even my beloved medium format cameras are gathering dust on the shelf. In fact, all my film cameras are gathering dust these days. Not only is the Digital Rebel easier to use than almost anything I have, but this camera produces professional quality images. When coupled with a good digital photo editing program you can completely eliminate the expense of running a darkroom. (I miss my darkroom but not the expense.)

If you are just testing the digital SLR waters, I suggest the 6.3MP Digital Rebel with two lenses. One standard 50mm, and one good variable zoom. (Something modest like a good 28-135mm.) I suspect this combo will suffice for about 95% of your needs.

Of course there are a few new features on the newer model Rebels. And you may just have to have them. However chances are that you are getting by without them now and what with the prices of the 6.3MP Rebel what it is, I would think you would have look real hard to justify the price of the 10MP model.

So what's not to like? You get a high quality digital SLR camera, at a good resolution, that accepts a very very wide selection of lenses. And you get it cheap! I like it!

It was a great gift for our photography major!

My wife's Son is attending college to concentrate on photography and asked if he could get this type of camera as a Christmas gift. It was a little bit more than my wife wished to spend, but it seemed liked a good, useful piece of equipment - a digital camera which functions like a regular 35mm type is the best way I can describe it, being a novice to photography myself - and since he researched it himself, our shopping was "done" for him. I got the OK from my wife to bid on it, we eventually won, and were soon the new owners of the camera. Of course, in his unbridled enthusiasm, our shutterbug neglected to notice, until after the bidding closed, that it was a used camera. It went off at about 1/2 of it's original price and was only about a year old, so we kept our fingers crossed until it arrived. Well, I can tell you that the camera was cosmetically pristine and that all original parts, wrappers and the carton were in tact. We were relieved and ultimately grateful to get such a mint conditioned item for such a good price. The unit worked perfectly, according to our boy, and he intends to wear it and use it constantly in that effort to snap the next award winning shot for National Geographic, or the school's newspaper, for now. The camera takes vivid pics, is fairly easy to use, and has many features a normal digital camera simply does not offer, such as interchanging lense capabilities. We were very lucky to have gotten such a nice item for a great price.

  Great starter SLR
Review created: 01/03/07

This is a great camera with which to learn SLR photography! It takes great pictures, can use the full line of Canon EF lenses, is durable and reliable. On the down side, it is a bit slow to start up and wake up from "sleep" mode and the 4 shot burst is a bit limiting, but I feel I have become a better action photographer by working within these limitations.

It has a firm feel in your hands, better than its successor, the XT, and a decent viewfinder and LCD screen. The speed of viewing could be improved, but that is a minor issue, since you really should wait to see the pictures on the computer before making too many decisions!

In short, it is fully capable of taking award winning pictures in the right hands and can be a useful learning tool for those wishing to improve their photographic skills. For the price, you can't beat it with a stick!

This is my second SLR and I truely like this one. Many great functions and options for the novus wanting to get pro like photos. Easy on the wallet and lots of upgrades available.
The only thing I wish was a bit better is the transfer rate for downloading photos, it's a bit slow. A card with 150 pictures on it will take about 15-30 minutes to download. I would probably invest in a card reader to speed things up a tad.
Great camera and would recommend to anyone.

Very nice camera. Definatley not for the beginner. There is an endless list of things you can do with this camera to thrill anyone that looks at your pictures. I just got back from Italy and Paris and have nothing to but good things to say about the camera. Almost all the pictures turned out incredible.

Never recieved the camera. I paided 439.00 for the camera, never got it. I am in a claim with Pay Pal now. Seems very bad to pay that much out, and can only hope to get back 200.00 minus 25.00 to do it.

This camera arrived in mint condition with a very nice zoom lens. I was dissapointed that it did not come with either a memory card or a battery so I was unable to verify the proper operation immediately, but as soon as the battery arrived and I purchased a memory card I was taking photographs like a professional which is what I intended.

This is a really good camera. The only thing that I don't like about it is that you have only a 4 shot burst then it needs to pause as it re-arms. The pictures are great and the 512 mb card is good for like 146 shots, I have two of them and it is more than enough for most uses. I use mine out side and in sports it is durable and not finicky at all.

As easy as you want it to be...

...that's a great way to describe the Canon Digital Rebel. Whether your an advanced amateur photographer or a Point and Shoot person, this camera will take you to the next level. Easy to use on the auto settings and fantastic results. Once you are comfortable on auto a simple roll of the dial gives you total or partial control of the exposure setting. Set the Aperture Value (AV) and let the Rebel take care of the shutter speed or set the shutter and allow the camera to choose the optimum lens opening. These controls pave the way for you to set the dial to the big "M" (manual control). Once you get this far the sky is the limit. Take it from someone who has been shooting photos of one type or another for 40+ years. This is one versatile camera! Take your choice of a nearly limitless selection of compatible EOS auto focus lenses. Five Stars and affordable as well!

Versatility is fantastic. Takes beutiful pictures under all conditions. Replaced a Canon film camera with it. Can experiment without wasting film. Fits the 3 lenses I already had. Heavier than the film camera but not excessively. Have a pocket size digital and it was time to move into the digital age with my main camera. Decided on this one based on reputation, price, uses current 35mm film lenses.

Original Canon Digital Rebel Can Be a Great Buy
Review created: 08/20/06
by:
29 of 64 people found this review helpful.

This is the camera I currently use for almost all of my eBay photos and for the photos shown in my guides about photography. Although it has been discontinued and superceded by the Digital Rebel Xt, this original Digital Rebel is still an amazingly good camera. At the prices now available on ebay for slightly used or reconditioned models, I think it is a heck of a bargain.

Though its 6 megapixel resolution produces a maximum image size 25% smaller than the Xt's, you won't be able to tell the difference on any print up to 8x10 and possibly even beyond. As a matter of fact, for eBay and other online photos, I always set mine to shoot at the minimum resolution of 1 megapixel, which still gives me plenty of room for cropping.

The big advantage of a digital single lens reflex such as this over a compact, non-SLR model is the versatility it offers. The interchangeable lenses allow you to customize the camera for your needs in a given photo situation. For travelling, for instance, I mount a wide-range 28-200mm telephoto zoom which covers almost any situation I'll encounter on a trip. In my studio, for my eBay photos, I use a special macro lens which lets me get incredible close-ups. If I want to shoot in very dim light, I mount my 50mm f/1.4 lens, which gathers almost every bit of available light, letting me shoot unobtrusively without a flash.

As with most other SLRS, the Canon Digital Rebel (otherwise known as the Canon 300D) can accept an external flash via the hot shoe mounted on the top. I use an adapter with mine which lets me connect the camera to my studio strobes for truly professional results.

Despite being discontinued, I think this is a camera model which can remain useful for a long time. It accepts a wide range of lenses and other accessories designed for the tried and tested Canon SLR system and will continue to accept ones introduced in the foreseeable future. The important thing is that it can make great photos now and will continue to do so.

I bought this camera knowing absolutely NOTHING about SLR cameras and wanting to get into photography on a hobbyist level. Canon makes it ever so easy to learn between all the wonderful guides they give you as well as the online courses that are free with the camera. It takes gorgeous images...crisp, clear, and just plain beautiful. The coloring is spot on as is the focus almost all the time thanks to all the wonderful settings and the multi-point autofocus features. I would list things i don't like but honestly there isn't anything. In my opinion its a wonderful camera for both hobbyist and professionals that don't have a massive budget.
