I had been trying to loose an extra 10 pounds for 5 years and then a friend recommended this book, outlining the South Beach Diet. This is such a helpful book and here's why:
Dr. A wrote the book to help you day by day. You'll never have to wake up and wonder what to eat. He gives you menus, recipies and recommendations from other dieters. He also gives you the science of why it works and reference charts so you can adapt your own tastes to the diet.
It's also great because if you fall off the diet a bit, he'll get you back on plan. He even tells you how to order at a restaurant.
I read the book, followed the diet about 90% of the time and lost 12 pounds in 5 weeks. I eventually lost the cravings for bad carbs and felt so healthy! I then passed the book to my Mom and she lost the same amount of weight.
I just had a baby and plan to jump right back on the South Beach Diet. If you buy this book, you will use it every day on your diet. I've never bought any other diet guides, but mine is right next to my stove, is bookmarked and has sauce all over it! It's sooo worth it!

I searched ever store and couldn't believe the price. Call me cheap! :) I just couldn't pass bidding on this book. The book came in perfect condition. It has been a great experience and I will buy again!

This book was okay, but not worth the money. Check it out at a library instead. Most of the recipes were expensive to make and labor intensive. Definitely hard for the working family living on a budget to adhere to.

Like: The diet works. It's an eating plan that you can live with long term.

Dislike: Recipes are just ok. They sound a lot better than they taste and most of them take a lot of pans and cleanup. Compared to "Eating For Life" cookbook from "Body for Life" these recipes don't even remotely compare with taste and ease of use.

I have never dieted before, so I was apprehensive of trying a "fad" diet. I was not too overweight (6'3" and 245 lbs.), but I needed to loose at least 20 lbs. This book claimed that I would loose 8-13 lbs. in two weeks. I decided to try it for those two weeks and if I lost within that range I would keep going. I lost 14 lbs.! In two weeks! This diet is so easy and I love everything I eat. Dr. Agatston explains the concept of how the diet works in the front half of the book, then the second half gives you recipes and lists of what to eat and not eat. It is so easy, even for someone like me (addicted to Wendy's french fries). The first week was the hardest, but beyond that I really didn't even want to go back to my old habits.

My doctor recommended this book to me when I was diagnosed with hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). I was told to follow the diet of a diabetic. This book teaches a diabetic how to eat! Although, I personally do not like a lot of the recipes in the book, simply because of the spices or vegetables in them, I have learned to "tweak" them to my likes. I found the book so educational as far as eating habits in general. I now stop and read labels in the store before buying anything. It's amazing how many products use enriched flour, high fructose syrup, and all the other "bad" things.

I did not need to lose weight, but had lost 8 pounds just eliminating sugar from my diet (before even owning this book). Therefore, I am able to not follow the different phases. This book is teaching me how to eat in general.

My mom and sister have each purchased the book after listening to me talk about it. To me, it's not so much about diet and weight loss, it's the educational experience of finding out what I've been eating.

book is great, as expected. I bought it so I could follow the principles of the South Beach Diet, not neccesarily follow it to the "T." The book is clear on the reasons for why the principles work. :D

I purchased the book for my husband who recently had triple bypass surgery. The book was recommended by his heart doctor. My husband has read parts of it but I honestly have only glanced at it and hope to read more when time permits. It appears to be easy reading and set up nicely. Has some interesting menus. Sorry I can't say more.

I love this book and the diet really worked for us. After an acquaintance died in his fifties from heart problems and being overweight, my husband & I decided we needed to lose a few pounds and didn't really know how to go about it, so I bought the South Beach Diet. My husband lost 10 pounds in the first two weeks of no carbs (you can add carbs back in gradually). It showed us that we can live without lots of pasta and bread everyday - I went on vacation after being on the diet for two weeks and only gained back a pound of the 4 I lost initially. I found myself making choices that follow the diet guidelines of limiting bread, pasta, potatoes, and eating more vegetables and protein instead. Definitely recommend the book and diet; it's that initial weight loss that gets a person pumped up to continue.

We like the regimented plan of the diet. The first two weeks are really hard since you're on a strict part of the diet and your body is de-toxing itself so you feel kind of cruddy. After this time the longer you follow the diet the better you feel. If you slip then your body gets a little sluggish, but once you resume the diet you feel good starting back. We bought the book for the great recipes that will help you succeed at this diet.

Excellent experience. The seller sent me an e-mail with the cost of the book the same day the auction ended. And, I had my book within a week. The book was in what I would consider "new" condition.

All my life I have constantly gone up and down with my weight my entire life. I know several people who have tried the South Beach Diet and have been very successful with it. This diet is very similar to The Atkins diet but they allow more things and it seems a little more easy to live with. I have tried the Atkins diet and lost almost 30 lbs but when I started eating regular things the weight just piled back on. This book is very easy to read and I cannot wait to start this diet. Oh yeah, they have wonderful recipes in the back too!

To me this is one of the best diets around. It teaches you the correct way to eat good fats and good carbs that helps you to achieve weight loss. My sister and I started this diet the last week of Jan 06 and stuck to it religiously and we did it on the buddy system. I did most of the cooking because she is not a cook. I always tried to find something different each week to cook for us and this was one of the keys to our success. I have to date lost 55 lbs and am still working on losing 40 more. My sister is at her goal weight, losing 45 lbs and still continues to eat the correct foods that we learned about in the book. It makes since everything that Dr. Agatston talks about in the book, and we come from a family of diabetics, so I really think that this is helping us in that respect also. You eat a lot of foods that are on the low end of the glycemic index and it keeps your blood sugar level low which in turns keeps you from being hungry. I wish I had found this diet years ago, it is a new way of living for the both of us and it is something that I think we can continue to live with the rest of our lives. I love it and would recommend it to anyone.

THIS BOOK HAS CHANGED MY LIFE!! I WOULD HIGHLY SUGGEST GETTING THIS BOOK IF YOU ARE LOOKING TO LOSE WEIGHT. IT IS A FOOD PLAN THAT YOU CAN LIVE WITH FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE. I HAVE BEEN FOLLOWING THE PLAN FOR 10 MONTHS AND HAVE LOST 57 LBS. IF YOU FOLLOW THE PLAN YOU WILL NOT BE HUNGRY. PHASE 1 IS THE FIRST TWO WEEKS WHEN YOU CAN HAVE NO CARBS OR SUGAR. PHASE 2 ADD BACK GOOD CARBS AND FRUIT,THIS IS THE PHASE THAT YOU STAY ON UNTIL YOU REACH YOUR GOAL WEIGHT. PHASE 3 IS THE EATING HABITS FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE. This is an excellent book for someone wanting to lose weight. It gives detailed explainations of how to eat, what to eat and why. If you follow this diet plan, you will lost weight. I know, I lost over 15 pounds already and I did NOT go hungry on this diet. Its the only plan that I have found that really works!

I got the book from the library but needed my own copy for all the great ideas and receipies. The diet works if you follow it and phase one does really take off ten or more pounds in two weeks. I'm on the next phase and have still been dropping a pound or two each week
very easy to follow. Just bring the food list of do and don'ts to go shopping with. Slenda is a good substituw for sugar and now after taste either.
sugar free ice pop make great desserts and feel llike you are not giving up everything

This is the best diet ever with the fastest results! I lost about 15-17 lbs. during a month of being on this diet. In fact, the South Beach Diet is no longer a "diet" but is now a 'lifestyle' for me! Also, it is not a "black and white" diet in that, if you slip-up and eat something 'forbidden' then your diet is forever sabotaged. It is the opposite with the SB diet...if you do slip-up you can always get back on the diet without sabotaging your achievements (provided you get back on it quickly and continue the plan of eliminating white bread, white flour, refined sugars and processed foods from your meals.)

After the initial weight, body fat and water loss, I am now able to take my body conditioning efforts to the next level...getting a lean body with tone muscles (albeit with the help of a personal trainer!) However, if it weren't for the SB diet, it would've taken me years to get to where I am right now!

Everything good that you've heard about this diet is absolutely true because it DOES GIVE YOU BONIFIDE RESULTS! And anything bad that you hear about the SB diet are from skeptics who have never tried the diet or have not followed the SB diet properly! So what have you got to lose (but that stubborn weight!) Go and give this diet a chance!!

I am never selling my copy of the SB diet...it is my new 'health bible!'

UPDATE:

It's been almost 2 years now since I've started the SB diet and I'm proud to say that I'm now a size 2 and weigh 109 pounds! Overall, during the course of 2 years, I've lost 40-43 lbs. and was able to maintain my new ideal size and weight!

Everyone, this "healthy life style method" actually works!! I am still on it. Granted, I occasionally eat bread and sweets, but...I keep it at a minimum as per the diet. What I do is I indulge on bread OR sweets up to 3 times a week. I try not to do more than that. If I do, then I get back on the "strict" phase for a week or two.

Bottom line is:
I don't believe in endorsing anything that doesn't work and I believe and feel passionate in the SB so much that I am compelled to share it with you! This is the only "diet" that makes sense and that has worked for me!!

This is an excellent diet for a healthier lifestyle. It goes into what sorts of things aren't healthy and why. There's a guide you can even copy off and take with you to the grocery store next time you need to shop for appropriate foods. It even suprises you by listing some foods people think might be fairly healthy but actually arent. There is a pretty extensive meal plan for each phase of the diet, and if you follow it, you WILL lose weight. I've read the book.. I've done the diet.. I've lost weight. Easy as that. It takes some self control and dedication but this is a life changing book if you will let it be.

A friend of mine shared this book with me and I wanted to get one of my own. I wanted to make sure that I gave the book back to it's owner. This diet book works, if you are willing to strictly follow it. The first two weeks are the hardest, as the body adjusts to the withdrawl of carbohyrates, the demon in Dr. Agatston's world order of "do's" and "don'ts" for the prospective dieter. But the rational is sound as Agatston is able to back up his diet with some common sense science.

Unlike Orstein's diet regime with its extreme requirements, (aimed primarily at people with heart problems), or other diet fads, South Beach is sensible about our love of carbs, especially sweets, and therefore, the dieting person can gradually work some treats back into his or her weekly menu. Hence, eating doesn't end up looking like a task or chore, as with Orstein's diet, or some of the fad diet regimes.

The book laid out well, readable, and will keep the dieting person on course without having too many hoops to jump through. The pay off is weight loss, which is ganranteed, as I, the reviewer have tried the South Beach diet, and lost thirty pounds over the course of months. The key is sticking to the diet, which, in the end, involves the dieter's will power, always the bottom line, whatever diet one chooses to go with to loss weight.
