I call it an eating program instead of a diet. The book is extremely informative. It helped me to understand the why's behind what to eat and what not to eat. The diet is very easy! I lost 15 lbs in about 3 weeks (even with some cheating).
book was not new as described,very used and has many obvious wear and tear, I wish if the buyer was honest about them in advance,I was planing to give it as a gift to my friend but I had to buy another book for him.
I bought this book for our son, because my husband and I have both succeeded in the So. Beach Diet.....total of 75 lbs., so we know it works! We have kept the weight we lost off, even during the holiday season, and have received kudos from our Dr.s! We've been weight and inches free since June, 2007. It is, no doubt, the easiest diet we have ever tried. If we were to gain any weight back, it would be easy to lose again. But, we absolutely have started a new way of living with our eating habits and there is no turning back.
I had high chloresterol and decided it was finally time to eat healthier. I really liked this book because it is more common sense and health than fad diet. I have lost weight many times before but then gained back more than I lost. This time, I decided to change what I eat forever for health instead of weight. I eat good carbs and proteins, low fat, and no sugar(except fruit) or white flour. I eat as much as I want whenever I want and have lost 27 pounds in 4 months painlessly.
I purchased this book because I'm interested in losing some weight, and I've talked with others who had success with the South Beach diet. The book is very infromative about the diet plan, gives food lists, daily meal suggestions, and recipes. I've only just begun the diet, but have tried a couple of the recipes, and I'm impressed. I would recommend it to anyone who is serious about losing weight.
I should start off with a disclaimer that I have only scanned the book at this point and have not read it in full, but I'll happily share my initial impressions. I was looking for an effective diet that allows for a variety of foods, which I believe south beach does once you pass its initial stages. However, I am a little concerned about how time consuming it seems to follow the specific cooking guidelines. Still, I do look forward to more thoroughly studying the diet and implementing it, since I have heard about friends having very good results.
The book is worth owning for the basic knowledge of South Beach. A lot of the recipes are more for 'high-end' eating but if you go by the basic food groups you will do well. Once you know what to eat and what not to eat you can pretty much gauge the rest of your diet without any help from the book. Overall the book is good, a few changes have been made to the diet since it came out so make use of websites to know what those are.
We like the book, everything is easy and everything taste good, wish it had a shopping list other then that great. it works wonderful if you do what it tells you and even if you go off a tiny lol my husband lost 70lbs in 4 months with it. so i can say it works.
I was really happy with my purchase of "The South Beach Diet." I had heard comments from several friends and then my daughter told me about her purchase of this book from Half.com. Written by a cardiologist to help his patients with weight loss, it is one of the safest, healthiest diets I have seen over my many years of dieting. I found it easy to follow, with a lot of help from suggested menus and even many good, appetizing recipes. This was a brand new book, priced about one third what I would have had to pay locally and even with shipping and handling, I saved. It was shipped promptly so I was able to start reading and dieting almost immediately. Thumbs up!!
Shipping was not as fast as I thought it would be. BUT when I contacted the shipper that I would like to have the book asap they sent it out right away.
Even if you aren't looking to lose a lot of weight, this book offers great information on how to make simple changes to your current lifestyle. It also provides easy to follow meal plans and recipes.

I first borrowed this book from our local library. After I decided to actually go on the diet, I found I needed to have the menu plan and food lists handy for a long time. There were paper back copies at a lower price, but I thought a hard cover would last better around the kitchen.
Some of the recipes are good, and you can use their ideas to create combinations of your own. I think the book could have been organized better, but once you get familiar with it, its fine. I have placed sticky book marks at the most used pages.
I bought this copy as a replacement for one I had loaned out. I didn't buy the original copy for weight loss, but because I was curious about the science behind this theory of dieting. It first appeared as just another fad diet, but if one keeps in mind that the initial carbohydrate-free period should be only temporary, the book may offer an understanding of the overload most of us devour in the form of unhealthy carbohydrates and its effects on our bodies, as well as how to combat this. I attempted to stay on the recommended diet along with my husband, but found that I could not tolerate the lack of carbohyrdrates as well as he. Moving along to the next levels more quickly than he worked much better for my lightweight build. But for people who need to lose weight and move toward a healthier way of eating without forever feeling as though they are missing out, this seems to be a reasonable way to do it. The book is written clearly and is easy to follow, and though the author backs up what he claims scientifically, the reader is not overloaded with medical language he cannot understand. The recipes in this volume and in the companion cookbook are truly tasty and practical. Most recipes call for using easily obtained grocery items and staples, rather than hard-to-find specialty foods. My family enjoyed nearly all of the recipes we tried and didn't miss the extra sugar. It's worth a look.
I bought this book for my college daughter and found that the whole family can benefit from it. I myself have Crohn's Disease and many of the recipes fit me as well. The book has so much common sense it really is misnamed calling it a "Diet" book. The book explains a painless way to alter your eating habits and provides you with alternate meals that are healthy and fulfilling. We have been using this book for almost a month now and my daughter, husband and I all feel much better.
I was surprised to find how much the Atkins diet and the South beach diet where similar. However, the South Beach diet looks like it is easier. I have tried both and they do work. The South Beach diet is much easier to stick with over time. The book was inexpensive and the cost of shipping was much more than the cost of the book.
My doctor recommended this book and diet for my husband and son who both have high cholesterol. Since I do at least half of the cooking it was important for me to read it and understand it. I found the book to be easily understood and well-written. The diet is not too difficult to follow in terms of it being logical and not one that leaves the average person feeling hungry. There is a companion book available and, in my opinion, needed to help with following through on the diet, but not needed to understand the overall diet. Because of this I rate it as Good rather than Excellent. Most people expect to use the one book alone. The companion book is called The South Beach Diet Good Eats Good Carbs Guide and is also by Arthur S. Agatston, M.D.
I would recommend reading the book to most people whether or not they plan to follow the diet. It has some good information about healthy eating and today's knowledge of carbs. On the other hand, I don't recommend the diet for everyone based on what our family doctor explained to my husband and son. He said it is a good diet, but is definitely not for everyone trying to lose weight. So as most cautions say, "check with your doctor first".
This book explains exactly how to change your eating habits for a healthier living. This is not a fab diet but a way of life that is easy to follow and very effective in weight loss and then maintaining your healthy weight. Take it from someone that has juggled weight throughout the years and has tried lots of different diet and exercise plans; this one works and is easy. In no time you will be looking great and feeling great with increased energy that will want to make you get up and move around. This self-proclaimed couch potato would rather be out enjoying life now. Not to mention that when you feel better about how you look, your significant other gets the benefits too!
i love being able to read about how i need to be eating healthy. I also liked how it came in on due time, wasn't expensive, and the condition that the book was in was great for being used.
