Pros:
non linear gameplay
Cons:
boring stages, bad music, to easy
I was excited when I first bought this game. I own Mario Land 1 and 3, and both of them where a blast. I figure this one would be equally has fun. Unfortunately it turn out I was wrong about this game.
Story.
After Mario rescued Sharshaland in Mario Land he return to his castle to find that he had been locked out. The person who has done it is Wario, to get back his castle Mario must recover 6 golden coins in order to return it to the castle.
Graphics.
This game is old, so old that it's not even super gameboy enhanced. So don't expect any color from this game. Has far has the rest of it goes it looks all right for how old it is. It's defiantly better then the original Super Mario Land, but not yet has advance has Wario land. The sprites look like a cross between Super Mario bros. 3 and Super Mario world.
Sound.
Now I have been playing portable games for about 4 years now, and I am used to the small but annoying sound speaker found in the game boy system. Yet the music in this still makes me want to cringe. It's annoying and repetitive please someone hit the mute button.
Gameplay.
First off unlike other Mario games this one is like Mega Man you get to choose what stage you want to start on. However unlike Mega Man there is nothing to be gain from a certain stage, so it doesn t matter. The difficulty of the stages is about the same has well.
All of the stages are typical Mario fashion of stomping on enemies while making it from one side to another. You can ring a bell at the midway to save there, and another one at the end to play a bonus game.
Power ups.
There are 4 power ups Mario will find in the game.
Star: invincibility justs like all the other Mario games, all though if you run into enough enemies you will start collecting 1ups.
Mushroom. Turns Mario into Super Mario.
Fire flower
Gives Mario a feather and lets him throw fire balls at his opponents.
Carrot Gives Mario the ability to turn into Rabbit and glide for short distances.
Now where are my problems with the game play. Here are a couple.
First off the game is too easy, I beat it on the first night I play it. While there are secrets to collect there are no rewards most of them lead to dead end stages. There is even an easy mode that makes it even easier.
2nd there is only 3 stages per zone (4 if you count the secret). Making each zone last only about 15 minutes for an experience player.
Any advantages.
Yeah unlike the rest of the game the last level is incredibly hard. It's a huge level without any midway points, die and you start all over. This is about the only thing I found that I couldn t beat in my sleep.
My recommendation.
Don't buy this inless your a beginner or a die hard Mario fan.
